Hradec Králové as “Salon of the Republic”. Architecture within the cultural representation

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá problematikou urbanismu a architektury města Hradce Králové na konci devatenáctého století a zejména v první třetině století dvacátého. Hradec Králové v tomto období získal přídomek "salon republiky". Práce se na okraj snaží nalézt odpověď na otázku, kdo, kdy a v jakém kontextu toto slovní spojení poprvé použil. Především se ale pokouší odhalit, jakou úlohu sehrála architektura a urbanistická kompozice v rámci kulturní reprezentace města, tj. nakolik odrážela socio-kulturní situaci ve městě a hlavně jaké motivy vedly k jejímu vzniku a určovaly její výslednou podobu. Tyto otázky jsou řešeny v návaznosti na konkrétní architektonická díla převážně českých tvůrců, jako byli například Jan Kotěra, Josef Gočár, Oldřich Liska nebo Václav a Jan Rejchlovi.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with urban planning and architecture of the city Hradec Kralove in the late nineteenth century and especially in the first third of the twentieth century. Hradec Králové acquired an attribut of "Salon of the Republic" at that time. In the beginning the thesis tries to find an answer to the question who used this collocation for the first time, when and in what context it was employed. But the main purpose is to uncover the role architecture and urban planning played within the cultural representation of the town, in other words how the former and the latter reflected the socio-cultural situation in the city and especially what motives led to their formation and determined their final form. All these questions are being resolved in relation to concrete architectural works which were projected by Czech creators mainly Jan Kotěra, Josef Gočár, Oldřich Liska or Václav Rejchl and Jan Rejchl.
