Disinformation of audience in Shutter Island

Abstract:

The main thesis of my bachelor´s thesis is a thorough analysis of a movie Shutter Island. Shutter Island is an american thriller about an investigation of a muderess who escaped from a mental facility located on an island near the US shore. Shutter Island had its premiere in February of 2010 after being pushed back almost four months due to lack of the finances needed to promote the movie. This changed nothing in terms of audience´s perception, actually on contrary. I have based my work and reasoning behind my analysis on some of the most important approaches of movie history. The most important theoretical approach is that of a neoformalist analysis that has been thoroughly defined in two theoretical works by Kristin Thompson and David Bordwell. The first book Naration in the Fiction Film by David Bordwell and the second work Breaking the Glass Armor by Kristin Thompson. The recognised dominant of Shutter Island is a disinformation of audience which colides with the position of the viewer. In relation to the narative structure of the movie, this is visible through the whole movie. The pull behind this movie lies within the unity of audience and character, which has been masterfully created on all levels of the movie. The main goal of my analysis was to show exactly that.

Abstract:

Hlavná premisa mojej bakalárskej práce je analýza filmu Prekliaty ostrov. Prekliaty ostrov ja americký thriller o vyšetrovaní vrahyne, ktorá utiekla z mentálneho ústavu nachádzajúceho sa na ostrove poblíž amerického pobrežia. Prekliaty ostrov mal premiéru vo februári 2010 po tom, čo sa premiéra posunula takmer o štyri mesiace kvôli nedostatku financií potrebných na propagáciu filmu. Moju prácu som založila na jedných z najdôležitejších prístupov ku filmovej histórii. Najdôležitejším teoretickým prístupom je neoformalistická analýza, ktorá bola definovaná v dvoch teoretických textoch od Kristin Thompsonovej a Davida Bordwella. Prvá práca sa nazýva Narration in the Fiction Film od Davida Bordwella a druhá Breaking the Glass Armor od Kristin Thompsonovej. Ako dominantu Prekliateho ostrova som identifikovala zavádzanie divákov, čo v priebehu filmu mení pozíciu diváka. V súvislosti s naratívnou štruktúrou filmu je toto viditeľné počas celého filmu. Atraktívnosť tohto filmu spočíva v jednotnosti diváka a postavy. Toto bolo umne vytvorené na všetkých úrovniach filmu. Hlavným cieľom mojej analýzy bolo ukázať práve túto skutočnosť.
