Ideal Female Beauty in Noun Phrases in Cosmetic Advertising for Afro-American Women

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce se zabývá stereotypním zobrazením ženské krásy, které lze najít v reklamách na vlasovou a pleťovou kosmetiku pro Afroamerické ženy v magazínu Ebony. Cíl práce je analýza vizuálních komponentů a analýza textu v 72 reklamách, která se zaměřuje na použití jmenných frází, jejich modifikace a konotace. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. První část poskytuje základní informace o stereotypním zobrazení ženské krásy v reklamě, o společenském a historickém pozadí Afroameričanů, a o tom, jak jsou typické rysy jejich vlasů a pleti v rozporu s ideálem takzvané bílé krásy, tak často prosazované v reklamě a médiích. Dále tato část poskytuje teoretické informace o jmenných frázích, o modifikaci, o druzích přídavných jmen a o tištěné reklamě. Druhá část práce analyzuje vybrané reklamy se zaměřením na vizuální složku a na užití jmenných frází ve složce textové. Práce potvrzuje hypotézu pouze částečně – potvrzuje, že adjektiva užitá v modifikaci jsou buď relační (když popisují funkci a obsah daných produktů) nebo kvalitativní (když popisují žádoucí či nežádoucí vzhled vlasů a pleti). Ideální či nežádoucí vzhled je inzerenty prezentován pomocí pozitivních a negativních konotací. Práce dále potvrzuje, že reklamy na vlasovou a pleťovou kosmetiku v Ebony v mnoha ohledech prosazují krásu typickou pro bílé ženy místo toho, aby podporovaly přirozený afroamerický vzhled. Nicméně, očekávaný pokles v prosazování tohoto ideálu v průběhu let 2000-2008 potvrzen nebyl.

Abstract:

The present thesis deals with stereotypical images of female beauty as presented in skin and hair cosmetic advertising for Afro-American women in Ebony magazine. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the visual and textual components of 72 advertisements with focus on the use of noun phrases, noun phrase modification, and connotations. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first one gives basic information about the stereotypical female portrayal in advertising, the social and historical background of Afro-Americans, and how the typical features of Afro-American hair and skin are in contradiction with the white beauty ideal which is often used in advertising and media. Furthermore, this part provides theoretical background on noun phrases, modification, types of adjectives, and printed advertising. The second part analyses the chosen advertisements and focuses on the visual components and the use of the noun phrases in the textual components. The thesis confirms the hypothesis only partially – it confirms that adjectives used as modifiers have either classifying function (when they describe the products’ function and contents) or qualitative function (when they describe the desired or undesired look of the hair and the skin). The ideal look and undesired look are presented by the advertisers with the help of positive and negative connotations. Furthermore, the thesis confirms that the hair and the skin advertisements promote the white ideal beauty in many aspects instead of supporting the natural Afro-American look. On the other hand, the expected decreasing tendency in the white beauty promotion throughout the years 2000-2008 has not been confirmed.
