Depression in the elderly in logn-term care

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem práce bylo analyzovat míru deprese u seniorů, kteří jsou hospitalizováni ve třech zařízeních dlouhodobé péče v Ostravě a Kopřivnici. Metodika: Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 150 seniorů (50 pacientů v anonymním zařízení č. 1, 50 pacientů v anonymním zařízení č. 2 a 50 pacientů v anonymním zařízení č. 3). Dotazníkové šetření bylo realizováno v období od 1. 7. 2017 do 31. 1. 2018. Ke zjištění stavu deprese byla použita standardizovaná Geriatrická škála deprese dle Yesavage (GDS), k analýze kognitivních funkcí byl použit Mini-mental State examination dle Folsteina a nestandardizovaný dotazník, který zjišťoval základní demografické údaje. Výsledky: Pomocí výzkumu bylo zjištěno, že výskyt deprese v dlouhodobé péči se neliší mezi zvolenými institucemi v Ostravě a Kopřivnici, dále nesouvisí s pohlavím, věkem, rodinným stavem, vzděláním, domácím prostředím, množství návštěv seniora a současně prožívanou bolestí. Pozitivní výsledky vyšly u respondentů, u kterých byl zkoumán důvod pobytu v dlouhodobé péči. Navíc bylo zjištěno, že téměř polovina (70 respondentů ze 150 dotazovaných) náhodných respondentů trpělo depresí. Závěr: V zařízeních dlouhodobé péče by se měla stát diagnostika a léčba deprese běžnou praxí, protože je to závažné onemocnění, které je zátěží jak pro samotného nemocného, tak i pro jeho rodinu a blízké. Proto by každý pacient, který přichází do dlouhodobé péče, měl byt pomocí dotazníku vyšetřen na výskyt deprese.

Abstract:

Object: The object of this thesis was to analyze the rate of depression in elderly people hospitalized in three long-term care facilities in Ostrava and Kopřivnice. Methods: The researched pool consisted of 150 elderly people (50 patients of the anonymous facility No. 1, 50 patients of the anonymous facility No. 2, and 50 patients of the anonymous facility No. 3). The questionnaire research was conducted between July 1st, 2017, and January 31st, 2018. The depression state was determined according to the Geriatric Depression Scale by Yesavage (GDS); the analysis of cognitive functions was carried out according to the Mini-Mental State Examination (Folstein test), using a non-standardized questionnaire to obtain the basic demographic data. Results: The research revealed that the prevalence of depression does not vary between the selected facilities in Ostrava and Kopřivnice; and that there is no connection between the depression and the sex, age, family status, education, family background, frequency of visits and/or pain suffered by the elderly. Positive results were found in cases where the analysis included the reason of the respondent?s stay in a long-term care facility. Moreover, depression was identified in almost half of random cases (70 of 150 respondents). Conclusion: The depression diagnostics and therapy in long-term facilities should become a common practice, as it is a grave disease that burdens not only the patients themselves, but also their families and friends. Therefore, each patient entering the long-term care should be screened for depression using a questionnaire.
