Historical computing methods and instruments

Abstract:

Cílem mé práce bylo popsat matematické pomůcky a metody, které se na nich daly použít. Kvůli širokému rozsahu tématu, jsem se zaměřila na abaky a jejich celkový vývoj. Na úvod bylo nezbytné, abych se zabývala poziční soustavou, díky které se výpočty na abaku mohou uskutečňovat. Poziční soustava dala číslům jasný tvar a jednotlivým číslicím jejich hodnotu. Až po jejím zavedení mělo smysl vynalézat početní pomůcku, která by výpočty zjednodušovala. Abakus během svého vývoje prošel mnoha změnami, od kamenné desky s vytesanými rýhami až po důmyslná počítadla s propracovaným systémem početních kuliček a pozičním umístěním čísel. Své poznatky o výpočtech jsem aplikovala na praktickém příkladu.

Abstract:

The aim of my study was to describe the mathematical instruments and methods, that can be used for calculations on them. Therefore, this theme is really wide and due to this fact, I focused on abacuses and their development only. At the first, I started with characterization of the positional system. This system is essential for abacus calculations. The positional system gave a bright figure to numbers and an exact value to numerals. After the stabilization of the positional system was found an abacus like an instrument for simplification of calculations. Abacus passed through a lot of changes, started like a stone desk and finished like a sophisticated gadget with system of the numerical beads and positional location of the numbers. I applied my knowledges about this type of the calculation to practical example.
