Analysis of asymmetric conflict - The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan

Abstract:

I přestože je téměř každý ozbrojený konflikt svou povahou více či méně asymetrický, chápeme v dnešní době pojem asymetrický konflikt jako konflikt, ve kterém proti sobě stojí na jedné straně pravidelná armáda státu či koalice států a na straně druhé nestátní ozbrojená skupina či skupiny. V asymetrických konfliktech dochází ke střetu dvou proti sobě bojujících stran s velmi výraznými nerovnostmi. Na jedné straně stojí státní aktér s početnou a velmi dobře vyzbrojenou armádou, kdežto na druhé straně se většinou nachází nestátní aktér, který oproti tomu státnímu zaostává jak v počtu ozbrojenců tak i jejich výzbrojí. Cílem slabšího aktéra není vojensky porazit svého nepřítele, ale snažit se co nejvíce podlomit jeho vůli a zájem v konfliktu pokračovat. Aby toho slabší aktér dosáhl, využívá nejčastěji strategii guerillového odboje nebo terorismu. Střet sovětských intervenčních vojsk s povstaleckými skupinami v Afghánistánu byl vyhodnocen jako asymetrický konflikt, neboť zapadá do jeho definičního rámce. Sovětská armáda je státní armádou, která po příchodu do Afghánistánu disponovala mnohonásobně technologicky vyspělejší technikou než její soupeř, kterým byly nestátní povstalecké skupiny, bojující proti komunistické vládě v Afghánistánu. Výzkumné otázky této bakalářské práce byly, v čem spočívala asymetričnost tohoto konfliktu a jak je možné, že sovětská armáda s obrovskou vojenskou přesilou a vybavena těžkou technikou si nedokázala poradit s afghánským odbojem, který tvořili z velké části pouze rolníci a pastýři? Odpovědí na tyto otázky je konstatování, že i přesto, že sovětská vojska disponovala mohutnou technologickou přesilou, nedokázala si poradit s nepřítelem, který se rozhodl bránit svou svobodu a svou zem za každou cenu. Navíc využil takovou strategii boje, na kterou nebyla sovětská armáda připravena. A ve spojení s dokonalým strategickým využitím znalostí afghánské krajiny dokázal nabourávat sovětskou vůli tak dlouho, dokud Sovětský svaz nevyhodnotil tuto situaci jako bezvýchodnou a byl donucen všechna vojska z Afghánistánu stáhnout.

Abstract:

Despite the fact that almost every armed conflict is more or less asymmetric by its nature, asymmetric conflict as a term in international relations theory is usually construed as a situation when there is a regular army of a state (or a coalition of states) on one side and a non-state armed group (or groups) on the latter. The level of armament, training and professionalism of the two fighting sides of asymmetric conflict is usually very different. While the state actor controls a large well-armed army, the non-state actor has only limited number of fighters whose military equipment is of much lower quality. The main aim of the weaker actor is not to defeat the stronger enemy on the battlefield, but to undermine his will, enthusiasm and interest to fight. Terrorism and guerrilla warfare are usually among the most common tools how to achieve such objective. The clash between the Soviet army and rebel troops in Afghanistan was assessed as an asymmetric conflict because it fits into the definition framework described above. Rebel groups which were fighting the communist government and consisted of shepherds and peasants faced the Soviet army that intervened in Afghanistan and possessed advanced technologies and incomparably higher number of soldiers. The objective of this bachelor thesis is to answer the research question that is focused on what aspects made the conflict in Afghanistan asymmetric and how it was possible that the Soviet army, armed with heavy technique, was not capable of dealing with the resistance of shepherds and peasants. The answer to these questions is suggested throughout the thesis by several facts. First, the Soviet technological superiority was overcome by immense determination of Afghani rebel fighters to defend independence and the country itself against Soviet invaders for any cost. Second, the rebel fighters used such a strategy of fighting which the Soviet army did not expect and was not ready for it. The key element of the strategy was a perfect knowledge of landscape of Afghanistan which helped the Afghani rebel troops to take advantage of appropriate positions and avoid vulnerable spots. And finally, the will of Afghani rebels to resist and fight was strong enough to force the Soviet Union to evaluate the situation in Afghanistan as desperate and withdraw its troops from the country.
