Reference interest rates and the transition from LIBOR to alternative rates

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá referenčními úrokovými sazbami a reformami, které je v posledních letech významně ovlivnily. Jedná se zejména o reformu, která měla za následek ukončení sazeb LIBOR. První část charakterizuje referenční sazby v obecném pojetí, představuje jejich právní úpravu v rámci Evropské unie a uvádí konkrétní příklady jejich využití se zaměřením na úvěrové a derivátové produkty. Druhá část se v jednotlivých kapitolách věnuje mezibankovním nezajištěným sazbám PRIBOR, EURIBOR a LIBOR s důrazem na jejich charakteristiku, historii a způsob jejich výpočtu. Třetí část popisuje proces nahrazování sazeb LIBOR a představuje jejich jednotlivé alternativy se zaměřením na alternativní sazbu SOFR. V poslední části je pomocí popisné statistiky provedeno srovnání měr polohy a variability sazeb SOFR a 3M USD LIBOR. Prostřednictvím ADF testu je testována stacionarita časových řad obou sazeb a následně jsou pro účel porovnání volatility data upravena pomocí prvních diferencí.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on benchmark interest rates and the reforms that have significantly affected them in recent years. In particular, it concerns the reform that resulted in the end of LIBOR. The first part characterises benchmark rates in general terms, introduces their regulation within the European Union and gives concrete examples of their use, focusing on credit and derivative products. The second part focuses on the interbank unsecured rates PRIBOR, EURIBOR and LIBOR, with an emphasis on their characteristics, history and method of calculation. The third part describes the process of LIBOR substitution and presents its alternatives, focusing on the SOFR. In the last part, a comparison of measures of the location and variability of SOFR and 3M USD LIBOR is made using descriptive statistics. The stationarity of the time series of the two rates is tested through an ADF test and then the data are first-differenced for the purpose of volatility comparison.
