Dynamics of Arctic proglacial lakes - mapping the origin and areal evolution based on the satellite images

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vývojem proglaciálních jezer na souostroví Svalbard za období 1990-2020. Pro jeho zhodnocení jsou využity satelitní snímky Landsat a Sentinel, které jsou následně zpracovány v softwaru ArcMap 10.7.1. Jezera jsou klasifikována na 3 kategorie, jezera hrazená ledovci, morénou a podložím. Výsledky ukázaly rapidní nárůst celkové plochy proglaciálních jezer na Svalbardu za posledních 30 let o 48,63 km2, na čemž se podílelo hlavně plošné rozšíření jezer hrazených morénou o 47,10 km2. Jezera hrazená podložím byla relativně stabilní, jelikož zaznamenala plošný nárůst pouhých 2,2 km2, kdežto jezera hrazená ledovci jako jediná vcelku ustoupila o 0,8 km2. Nejrapidněji rostoucími jezery za zmíněné období byla obě jezera hrazená morénou Trebrevatnet (15,27 km2) a Gandvatnet (10,5 km2) a největší ústup (3,24 km2) náležel jezeru Flysjøen hrazeným ledovcem. Mimo to došlo také k zániku 3 jezer, a to jezera Universitetbreen hrazeného morénou a 2 jezer hrazených ledovci, tedy Staurbreen a Isausa. Výsledky potvrdily současný trend rapidního plošného růstu proglaciálních jezer v Arktidě a v celém světě. Prudce rostoucí morénou hrazená jezera (8) a ledovcem hrazené jezero Branevatnet odráží rostoucí pravděpodobnost vzniku GLOF. Naopak relativní stabilita jezer hrazených podložím odráží velký vliv geologického podloží (v tomto případě složeného z metamorfovaných a vyvřelých hornin) na jejich vývoj. Podrobná případová studie změn plošného rozsahu jezera Trebrevatnet v ablačních sezónách v období 2016-2021 nastínila závislost plošného rozsahu jezer na době tání sněhové pokrývky a ledovců, které jsou ovlivněny maximálními teplotami vzduchu na konci července. Zároveň dvě situace náhlého významného nárůstu plochy jezera Trebrevatnet poukázaly na problém delimitace plošného rozsahu jezer skrze satelitní snímky, který je zatížen nejistotou plynoucí ze sezónní variability plošného rozsahu. To může být eliminováno analýzou většího počtu snímků během jedné sezóny. Názorným příkladem je zaznamenaný kontinuální nárůst minimální plochy jezera Trebrevatnet, který za 6 let byl 1,27 km2. Zjištěný významný nárůst plochy jezer (46,83 km2) za posledních 30 let ve spojitosti s probíhajícím velmi prudkým oteplováním Svalbardu naznačuje, že tento trend bude pokračovat i v blízké budoucnosti.

Abstract:

The magister’s thesis deals with the evolution of the proglacial lakes in the Svalbard archipelago during 1990-2020. Satellite images acquired from Landsat and Sentinel are used to evaluate the areal extent changes. The lakes were further classified into threee basic categories based on their origin: ice-dammed lakes, moraine-dammed lakes and bedrock-dammed lakes. The analysis have shown a rapid increase in the total lake area of the proglacial lakes over the last 30 years by 48,63 km2. The main contribution to such increase can be found in the category of the moraine-dammed lakes with the total increase of 47,10 km2. Bedrock-dammed lakes have shown to be relatively stable, as they underwent an areal increase of only 2,2 km2, while ice-dammed lakes were the only ones to recede by 0,8 km2. The fastest-growing lakes were both moraine-dammed lakes Trebrevatnet (15,27 km2) and Gandvatnet (10,5 km2) and the largest retreat of the ice-dammed lake belonged to the Flysjøen Lake (3,24 km2). Besides that, complete drainage of the 3 lakes also occurred, namely the Universitetbreen moraine-dammed lake and 2 ice-dammed lakes, i.e. Staurbreen and Isausa. The results have confirmed the current trend of rapid areal increase of the proglacial lakes in the Arctic and the whole world. The rapidly growing moraine-dammed lakes (8) and the ice-dammed lake also reflect the increasing likelihood of the GLOF event. On the contrary, the relative stability of bedrock-dammed lakes reflects the important influence of the geological bedrock (in this case composed of metamorphic and igneous rocks) on lake development. At the same time, the detailed case study of areal changes of the lake Trebrevatnet in ablation seasons in the period 2016-2021 illustrated the dependence of the area of lakes on the duration of snowmelt and melting of the glacier, which corresponds well with air temperature maximum at the end of July. Concurrently, two situations of the sudden significant areal increase of the lake Trebrevatnet pointed to the problem of delimitation of the area through the satellite imagery, which is burdened by the uncertainty resulting from the seasonal variability of the area. This can be eliminated by analysing larger number of images per season. This is demonstrated in the recorded continuous increase of the minimum area of the lake Trebrevatnet, which was 1,27 km2 in 6 years. The final assessment of the evolution trend of the proglacial lakes in the Svalbard archipelago showed an important areal increase (48,63 km2) over the last 30 years, in connection with rapid warming of Svalbard (3,8 °C over the last 100 years). In case of the continuation of the climate warming, it is very likely, that the increase of lake areal extent will go on.
