The language of conspiracy: A multimodal discourse analysis of fake news texts written in Czech and English.

Abstract:

Mediální krajina se přizpůsobuje trendům rychlé konzumace zpráv, a tak vznikají tzv. článková okénka (newsbites), jejichž cílem je shrnout mediální články, a to seskupením titulků, obrázků a perexů v kompaktních okéncích. Cílem této práce je prozkoumat jazykové a vizuální mody článkových okének na českých a anglických webových stránkách šířící fake news, za účelem zmapování jejich charakteristických rysů a posouzení míry jejich persvaze. K tomu práce využívá přístup ke zpravodajskému diskurzu podle Bednarek a Caple (2012) a provádí analýzu tzv. news values, kritérií evaluace, komunikačních funkcí obrázků, vztahů mezi textem a obrázkem a také kompozice rozložení vybraných dezinformačních webů. V analýze byla použita data získaná z reprezentativního vzorku šesti dezinformačních webů, z nichž je polovina webů českých, s tím, že z každé webové stránky byly vybrány tři reprezentativní článková okénka. Tato data byla vybrána z důvodu provedení synchronní studie, která zkoumá strategie persvaze dezinformačních webů ze dvou různých kultur. Z výsledků analýzy vyplývá, že české dezinformační weby jsou sice jednoduché, co se vzhledu, vizuálních prvků a funkcí týče, zato publikují článková okénka, která jsou celkově více persvazivní.

Abstract:

As the digital media landscape adapts to fast-paced news consumption trends, newsbites have emerged with the goal to summarize news articles by clustering headlines, images, and leads in compact article windows. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the linguistic and the visual modes of newsbites used in Czech and English fake news websites in order to map out their characteristics and assess their level of persuasiveness. To do that, the thesis adopts Bednarek and Caple's (2012) approach to news discourse to perform the analysis of news values, parameters of evaluation, communicative functions of images, and text-image relations and the composition of the layout of selected fake news websites. The data used in the analysis was collected from a representative sample of six fake news websites, half of which are produced in Czech. From each website, three representative newsbites were collected. The reason for the selection of this data was to provide a synchronic study that explores the persuasion strategies of fake news websites from two different cultures. The results of the analysis indicate that while Czech fake news websites are simple in terms of their layout, visual features, and website functions, they publish newsbites with a higher overall persuasive force.
