Experiment on factors influencing customers’ honesty

Abstract:

Předložená diplomová práce se zabývá specifickou oblastí nepoctivosti, která pochází ze strany zákazníků restaurací. Jedná se o replikaci experimentu skupiny autorů Azar et al. (2013), v rámci kterého zákazníkům izraelské restauraci byla vrácena vyšší částka, než by měla. Jako závislá proměnná bylo sledováno, zda zákazník přebývající peníze vrátí. Replikace byla realizována formou terénního experimentu ve dvou vybraných brněnských restauracích a konečný vzorek se skládal z 219 pozorování. Zjistilo se, že 70 % zákazníků vrátilo nadměrnou částku, tudíž většina se zachovala poctivě. Byla nalezena podpora pro všechny tři hypotézy stanovené na základě výsledků původní studie: podíl zákazníků, kteří vrátili peníze, byl vyšší u těch, kteří obdrželi vyšší nadměrnou částku než u těch, kteří obdrželi nižší částku; opakovaní zákazníci vraceli nadměrnou částku častěji než jednorázoví zákazníci; ženy vracely peníze častěji než muži. Výsledky také naznačují, že návštěva restaurace o víkendu a ve večerních hodinách znamená vyšší pravděpodobnost vrácení nadměrné částky.

Abstract:

The submitted diploma thesis focuses on a specific area of dishonesty, which comes from the customers. This is a replication of Azar et al. (2013) experiment conducted in Izraeli restaurant, where customers who paid with cash received excessive change. The observed dependent variable was whether the customer returns excessive change. The replication was carried out in the field in two Brno restaurants, and the final sample consisted of 219 observations. It was found that 70 % of the customers returned excessive change; therefore most of them were honest. The support was found for all three hypotheses, based on existing results of the original study: customers who received higher extra change are more likely to return it than those who received lower extra change; repeated customers are more likely to return the extra change than one-time customers; women are more likely to return the extra change than men. The results furthermore suggest that visiting the restaurant during the weekend and in the evening leads to a higher probability of return.
