Marina Abramovič: Using a body as medium in performance

Abstract:

Marina Abramović, a Serbian, controversial artist, is one of the main figures in performance art. This bachelor thesis deals with the history of performance art from the perspective of work with the body and analysis of three particular pieces of Abramović´s work based on their interaction with the audience. In this work, there are described influences affecting her performance art and the features od her work that are, according to her, the most important ones. As a comparison, work of artists Yoko Ono and Carolee Schneemann is used. Their art, in contrast with Abramović´s, had a strong feminist message and they innovative approaches Abramović used in the creation of her performances and in communication with the audience and to compare them with the artwork of female artist of the same generation.

Abstract:

Marina Abramović je srbská, kontroverzná umelkyňa, ktorá je jednou z hlavných postáv performance tvorby. Táto práca sa zaoberá históriou tejto tvorby z pohľadu práce s telom a analýzou troch vybraných diel Abramović na základe ich interaktívnosti s divákmi. V práci je popísané, aké vplyvy pôsobili na podobu jej tvorby a čo sú podľa nej najdôležitejšie zložky jej diel. V poslednej kapitole práce je uvedená tvorba autoriek Yoko Ono a Carolee Schneemann, ktoré bojovali za práva žien a ich diela niesli, na rozdiel od Abramović, silno feministický podtón. Cieľom bude popísať inovačné prístupy akými Abramović pristupuje k umeniu performance a ku komunikácii s divákmi a komparovať ich s tvorbou generačne rovnakých autoriek.
