Does Work Destroy the World? Applicability of the Second Law of Thermodynamics and the Idea of Entropy in Environmental Argumentation

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá použitelností 2. termodynamického zákona a pojmu entropie v environmentální argumentaci. Klade si za cíl uvést do souvislosti fyzikální pojetí entropie (se snahou o maximální zachování původního významu tohoto pojmu) a environmentální argumenty, které formulují přestavitelé ekologické ekonomie, zejména Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen a Herman E. Daly. Zkoumá, zda jsou použité argumenty fakticky správné a zda je zavedení termodynamických pojmů do ekologické ekonomie přínosné pro lepší pochopení a popsání ekonomického procesu. Autorka dochází k závěru, že faktická správnost použití termodynamických pojmů v ekonomii je různá, je třeba posuzovat jednotlivé případy. Co se týče informačního přínosu použití termodynamických pojmů v ekonomii – 2. termodynamický zákon vyjadřuje základní princip fungování okolního světa, pro popis (nejen) ekonomické činnosti by měl být východiskem. Použití pojmu entropie je vzhledem k jeho více možným interpretacím obtížné.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the question of applicability of the second law of thermodynamics and the idea of entropy in environmental argumentation. Its aim is to make a link between a physical meaning of entropy (trying to maintain the original physical meaning of this term) and environmental arguments which are used by representatives of ecological economics, especially Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen and Herman E. Daly. It examines whether the used arguments are right and whether their introduction into the field of ecological economy is useful for better understanding and describing of economic process. The authoress finds out that correctness of using thermodynamical terms in economy differs among particular cases. About contribution of thermodynamical terms to better understanding of economic process, the second law of thermodynamics is considered to be a principal rule of the world around, it should be a starting point of each describtion of (not only economic) activity. Use of the term entropy is complicated because of its various interpretations.
