Songs of Ladislav Vycpálek with Focus on the Analysis of the Song Cycles Silent Reconciliations, op. 1, Awakening, op. 17 and In God´s Palm, op. 14

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřená na písňovou tvorbu Ladislava Vycpálka, zejména pak na analýzu písňového cyklu Probuzení, op. 17 a výběr písní z cyklu Tichá usmíření, op. 1. a cyklu V Boží dlani, op. 14. Dostupná literatura poskytuje údaje o Vycpálkově životě a díle a obecně charakterizuje jeho hudební řeč, avšak nenabízí detailní analýzy jeho písňové tvorby a další informace užitečné pro interprety. Předkládaná práce v úvodních kapitolách představuje Ladislava Vycpálka jako skladatele Novákovy školy, hudebního kritika a překladatele a tvůrce vlastních básnických textů. Třetí kapitola pojednává o jeho písňové tvorbě a rozděluje ji na písňovou tvorbu umělou a úpravy lidových písní. Jádrem práce je kapitola čtvrtá, která se věnuje analýze výše uvedených písňových cyklů z hlediska kompoziční techniky, motivické struktury, modality, formy a vzájemného vztahu hudby a textu. Závěr usiluje o syntézu dosažených poznatků a jejich porovnání s informacemi dostupnými v existující literatuře.

Abstract:

This Bachelor's thesis discusses the songs of Ladislav Vycpálek with particular focus on the analysis of his song cycle Awakening, op. 17 and selected pieces from the song cycles Silent Reconciliations, op. 1, and In God´s Palm, op. 14. While the existing literature offers information on the composer's life and work, providing general characteristics of his compositional language, it does not contain detailed analyses of his songs and other practical information which performers might find useful. In the initial chapters, this thesis introduces Vycpálek as a composer (one of Vítězslav Novák's students), a music critic, a translator, and a poet. The third chapter contains an overview of Vycpálek's songs (including art songs and folksong arrangements). The core of the thesis is contained in the fourth chapter, which presents original analyses of selected song cycles, commenting on issues of compositional technique, motivic structure, modality, form, and the relationship between poetry and music. The conclusion synthesises the findings of the preceding analyses, comparing them with the general characteristics found in the existing literature.
