Artistic decoration of the Dominican monastery church of St. Michael in Brno

Abstract:

Tématem předkládané práce je jak dochovaná, tak i zaniklá či ztracená barokní výzdoba brněnského chrámu sv. Michaela archanděla (dnešní stavba z let 1655–79), při němž od 1. poloviny 13. století do roku 1784 působil řád bratří kazatelů – dominikánů. Nejpozoruhodnějšími díly jsou kazatelna a čistě sochařsky ztvárněný hlavní oltář od Josefa Winterhaldera st. a řádových umělců Dominika Kirchnera a Damascena Schwarze ze 40. let 18. století; boční oltáře, obnovené postupně mezi 40. a 70. lety, zdobí rovněž práce předních moravských umělců své doby. Z nejstarší výzdobné vlny, datovatelné mezi 60. léta 17. století a počátek století 18., se s výjimkou zvonu, několika náhrobních kamenů a řezbářských prací na pomezí uměleckého řemesla patrně žádná díla nedochovala, sekundárními prameny máme doloženo pouze několik jmen. Z 10. a 20. let 18. století pochází sochařská výzdoba varhanní skříně a průčelí kostela od Antonína Rigy. Tomu je někdy přisuzována také socha sv. Jana Nepomuckého na rampě u kostela – v otázce jejího autorství se však literatura dodnes neshoduje. Zbytek světeckých soch, lemujících chrám ze strany dnešního Dominikánského náměstí, pochází z 30. let. Dosud málo povšimnutými součástmi výzdoby jsou soubory, datovatelné snad do 60. let 18. století – zpovědnice s figurálními řezbami a andílci na parapetu hudební kruchty. Kromě pokusu o základní popis a zařazení těchto děl práce přináší dvě dosud zcela neznámá, vysoce kvalitní díla, nalezená na chrámové oratoři, která mohla patřit k původní výzdobě kostela – řezby Krista Vzkříšeného a apokalyptického Beránka –, a dále pak fotografickou dokumentaci sedmi dřevěných soch, které byly v minulosti nalezeny na půdě chrámu. Práce pojímá výzdobu jako celek, snaží se ji v rámci možností zasadit do kontextu, tvořeného již zpracovaným barokním mobiliářem moravských a českých řádových kostelů, a přispět tak k hlubšímu zhodnocení role dominikánů jako objednavatelů v 17. a 18. století, jež v našem prostředí dosud chybí.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with preserved as well as perished or lost Baroque decoration of St. Michael the Archangel´s Church in Brno (current building dating back to 1655–79), which was the site of The Order of Preachers, Dominicans, from the first half of the 13th century until 1784. The pulpit and the High Altar, a purely sculptural work of art by Josef Winterhalder the Elder and Dominican artists Dominik Kirchner and Damascen Schwarz from the 40s of the 18th century belong to the most remarkable objects. Side-altars, being restored from the 40s to 70s, were also decorated by prominent Moravian artists. From the oldest decorative phase, which can be dated back to the period between the 60s of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, no pieces of art – except of a bell, a few tombstones and woodcarvings – seem to be preserved, secondary sources evidence only a few authors. The sculptural decoration of the organs and the church front by Antonín Riga date back to the second and third decade of the 18th century. Antonín Riga is also sometimes considered to be the author of the Statue of John of Nepomuk standing at the platform by the church, but literature still has not come to an agreement concerning the authorship of the statue. The rest of the statues of saints, overlooking the Dominican Square, dates back to the 30s. Until now little attention has been paid to decorative collections probably from the 60s of the 18th century – confessionals with figural carvings and little angels in the parapet of the musical choir. Besides a basic description and analysis of these artworks the thesis introduces two unknown and highly valuable objects that have been found at the church oratory and could have been parts of the original decoration – carvings of Resurrected Christ and the Apocalyptic Lamb. The thesis also includes photographic documentation of seven wooden sculptures that in the past were discovered in the church attic. The thesis focuses on the church decoration as a whole, contextualizes it within the framework of the equipment of other Czech and Moravian holy orders churches that has been already described and aims to contribute to the wider recognition of Dominicans as clients that is still missed in Czech literature.
