Ronin and their role in political events of the Bakumatsu era

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl zhodnotit roli róninů v době svržení tokugawského šógunátu. Práce je rozdělena do tří hlavních částí. První část práce se zabývá problematikou róninů po roce 1600. Zde jsou objasněny historické a společenské souvislosti, které vedly k nárůstu počtu „samurajů bez pána.” Zde je také kladen důraz na analýzu sociálního statutu róniů. Druhá část je zaměřena na období bakumacu a na události, které vedly ke svržení šógunátu. Třetí část analyzuje to, jak byli róninové do těchto událostí zapojeni, jak na straně odboje proti šógunátu, tak na straně bakufu. Zde se zabýváme tím, jak byli róninové spontánně či organizovaně zapojeni do aktivit namířených proti šógunátu a jaká byla jejich role v hnutí sonnó džói. Dále se v této souvislosti věnujeme jednotkám Šinsengumi, které naopak sehrály významnou roli při obraně šógunátu.

Abstract:

This thesis is aimed to evaluate the role of rōnin during the period of the Tokugawa fall. The thesis is divided into three main parts. The first part is focused on ronin in early Tokugawa period. It brings closer look to the historical and social context, which led to an increase in the number of “masterless samurai.” This part also analyze their social status. The second part deals with the events, which led to the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate in the Bakumatsu era. The third part analyzes, how rōnin were involved in these events, both on side of the anti-bakufu movement and bakufu. It focuses on their role in the sonnō jōi movement and their anti-shogunate activities. On the other hand, it deals with the Shinsengumi unit, which played an important role in the defense of the shogunate.
