Textometric Tools Applied to the Phenomenon of Verlanization in the Corpus of the Rap Songs

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the phenomenon of verlanization by means of textometric programmes (Lexico 3, TextObserver, Alceste) in the rap corpus RapCor. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the practical application of these programmes on the concrete lexical phenomenon. In the theoretical part, we present the basic notions which touch slang language, sociolinguistic aspects of the word-forming process of verlanization and the general characterisation of French rap. Furthermore, there are presented used textometric programmes. The starting point of the preparation of our corpus were lyrics of 270 rap songs which were tagged and prepared for the import into the programmes mentioned bellow. The practical part includes a general description of the corpus as well as a detailed analysis of the geographic distribution of the verlan. The aim of this work is to prove statistically that rappers from northern France use verlan more often than their colleagues from the south. In addition, we study this distribution according to the level of the integration into the common language (lexicalized, semi-lexicalized, non-lexicalized) and according to the type of formation of the verlanisation. This work shows the results about typical morphological features associated to verlanisation in both geographical regions. In the end, we focus on the methodological problem related to the preparation of the corpus where, using lexicometric tools, we show if it’s necessary to differentiate featuring interprets and in the case of groups also the distribution of the lyrics between the different singers of the group.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce zkoumá fenomén verlanizace pomocí textometrických programů (Lexico 3, TextObserver, Alceste) v rapovém korpusu RapCor, jejichž praktickou aplikaci se snaží demonstrovat při výzkumu konkrétního lexikálního jevu. Teoretická část představuje základní pojmy, které se dotýkají slangové mluvy, sociolingvistických aspektů slovotvorného postupu metatezí nazývaného verlan a obecné charakterizace francouzského rapu. Také jsou zde komparativně představeny použité textometrické programy. Východiskem pro přípravu korpusu se staly texty 270 rapových skladeb, které byly označkovány strukturními tagy a připraveny pro import do výše zmiňovaných programů. Praktická část pak přináší obecný popis korpusu, ale i detailní analýzu geografické distribuce verlanu. Cílem práce je statisticky dokázat, že rappeři ze severu Francie používají verlan častěji než jejich kolegové z jihu. Dále je tato geografická distribuce verlanizací kvalitativně zkoumána podle stupně začlenění do obecného jazyka (lexikalizované, pololexikalizované, nelexikalizované), a také podle způsobu tvoření verlanu. Práce přináší výsledky o typických morfologických rysech spojených s verlanizací v každé ze zkoumaných geografických oblastí. Závěrem je také věnována pozornost metodologickému problému přípravy korpusu, kdy pomocí výsledků lexikometrických nástrojů ukazujeme, zda je třeba rozlišovat hostující interprety a v případě skupin i distribuci textu mezi několika interprety.
