Love, Madness and Death: Alcohol and Addiction in Jens Bjørneboe's The Sharks

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the representation of alcohol and addiction in The Sharks, a novel written by the Norwegian writer Jens Bjørneboe. I analyze how alcohol and addiction are thematized and in which contexts they appear in the text. The fact that the author was addicted to alcohol is taken into account, as it is likely that he reflected his experiences with alcohol in his writings. The goal of this thesis is thus to analyze how an addicted writer reflects his own alcoholism, but also alcohol, in his literary fiction.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá vyobrazením alkoholu a závislosti v románu Žraloci norského spisovatele Jense Bjørneboeho. Je zde zkoumáno, jakým způsobem jsou alkohol a závislost tematizovány a v jakých souvislostech se v textu objevují. Při práci vycházím z faktu, že sám autor byl dlouhodobě závislý na alkoholu a že tyto zkušenosti tak mohl promítnout do své literární tvorby. Cílem práce je tedy analyzovat, jakým způsobem spisovatel závislý na alkoholu reflektuje jak svoji závislost, tak alkohol samotný v uměleckém textu.
