Analysis of dictionary attacks on honeypots

Abstract:

Tak, jak roste počet lidí využívajících výpočetní techniku a jak se do paměti počítačů ukládá stále více důležitých dat, zvětšuje se i počet pokusů o krádež autentizačních údajů uživatelů a jejich následné zneužití. Tato práce analyzuje data získaná honeypoty univerzitní sítě, tj. informace o pokusech proniknout do školní sítě. Těžiště práce je v analýze a srovnání slovníků hesel a uživatelských jmen, která útočníci použili. Srovnávání je prováděno z různých hledisek, např. vzájemná podobnost slovníků, zastoupení defaultních hesel, podobnost s hesly, která unikla na Internet… Součástí práce je i skript, který provádí základní analýzu slovníků a je použitelný i v dalších letech.

Abstract:

Just as the number of people using information technology grows and just as there’s more and more important data saved into computer memory, so grows the number of attempted thievery of authentication data of users and their consequential abuse. This thesis analyzes data gathered by honeypots of the university i.e. information about attempted infiltrations into the university network. Focus of this thesis is analysis and comparison dictionary of passwords and usernames which were used by attackers. Comparison is conducted from different viewpoints, e.g. interrelations of dictionaries, representation of default passwords and resemblance to passwords which leaked to the Internet… Part of the thesis is also a script which conducts basic analysis of dictionaries and it’s useable in years to come.
