Native American Stereotypes in the American Television Industry

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on the Apache stereotypes that were broadcast on television in the 1950s and 1990s and their impact on public perception. The theoretical part presents the history and cultural characteristics of the Apache people. In addition, this part of the thesis examines the relationship between Apaches and Americans in the 19th century. The practical part conducts an analysis using three approaches. The main aim of the analysis is to reveal the real images of Apaches as well as to show stereotypical behaviours that were created on the basis of the political and social changes of the time. The primary sources of the analysis are the television series Broken Arrow (1956-1958) and the television film Geronimo (1993).

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na stereotypy Apačů, které byly vysílány v televizi v 50. a 90. letech 20. století, a jejich vliv na vnímání veřejnosti. Teoretická část představuje historii a kulturní charakteristiku Apačů. Kromě toho se tato část práce zabývá vztahem Apačů a Američanů v 19. století. Praktická část provádí analýzu pomocí tří přístupů. Hlavním cílem analýzy je odhalit skutečné obrazy Apačů a také poukázat na stereotypní chování, které bylo vytvořeno na základě politických a společenských změn té doby. Primárními zdroji analýzy jsou televizní seriál Broken Arrow (1956-1958) a televizní film Geronimo (1993).
