The effect of head posture on the facial morphology

Abstract:

Morfologie měkkých tkání obličeje je ovlivněna působením gravitace. Předpokládá se, že rozdíly ve směru gravitačního vektoru síly mohou způsobit rozdíly ve tvaru obličeje v závislosti na poloze hlavy. Tato práce zkoumá rozdíly morfologie obličeje v poloze v sedě a v poloze vleže, také závislost míry těchto změn na množství podkožního tuku a pohlaví. Padesáti vybraným probandům byl nasnímán obličej v poloze v sedě a v poloze vleže pomocí optického skeneru Vectra H1. Zároveň byla u těchto probandů změřena šířka kožní řasy (na tváři a podbradku) a zaznamenán BMI. Získané skeny byly analyzovány metodou srovnávání polygonálních sítí v programu FIDENTIS Analyst 132_15b cílem zhodnotit podobu a míru změny morfologie obličeje při změně polohy hlavy, její vztah k interindividuální variabilitě a tloušťce měkkých tkání. Srovnávání ukázalo, že se obličej při změně polohy mění v oblasti nasolabiální rýhy, která je vleže méně prominentní, zatímco dochází k větší plnosti tváří, exkrudci očí a získání plnější rtů. Celková hodnota této změny nepřesahuje míru, se kterou se mezi sebou liší jednotliví jedinci. Změna pozice nemá vliv na vzorec odlišnosti mezi jedinci. U mezipoziční vzdálenosti nebyla nalezena žádná závislost na množství podkožního tuku ani na pohlaví jedince.

Abstract:

Morphology of soft face tissues is affected by gravity. Differences in the direction of gravity vector are thought to cause differences in shape of face, depending on head position. This thesis examines the effect of head position on facial soft tissues as well as the dependence of these changes on the amount of subcutaneous fat and sex. Faces of fifty selected probands were scanned in upright and supine position using a Vectra H1 optical scanner. The thickness of skinfold on the cheek and below the chin and the BMI of each proband was recorded. The scans were analyzed using the FIDENTIS Analyst 132_15b polygonal mesh comparison method. The goal was to evaluate the shape and amount of changes in facial morphology caused by head position and its relationship to interindividual variability and soft tissue thickness. Comparison has shown that the supine position reduces prominence of the nasolabial fold, while further increasing the volume of the cheeks and the lips and the extrusion of the eyes. The total value of this change does not exceed the amount of the interindividual variability. Changing the head position does not affect the pattern of differences among individuals. There was no dependence between the interposition distance and the amount of subcutaneous fat or sex.
