"We are all extremophiles" Louis Bec's Bio Art

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje především dílům teoretika médií a filosofa Viléma Flussera a francouzského umělce Louise Beca, především pak jejich spolupráci na knize Vampyroteuthis Infernalis. Studie analyzuje jednak tvorbu Viléma Flussera, především jeho práci na poli mediálních studií, teorie komunikace a kultury. V případě Louise Beca se pak věnuje jeho tvorbě bioartové a tzv. Zoosystémii. Celá studie je uvedena stručným náčrtem teorie bioartu a přístupů k němu. Jádrem práce je pak podrobná analýza samotného společného díla, rozbor jeho hlavních tezí a zkoumání vzájemných vlivů mezi oběma jejich autory.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the works of important media philosopher and theoretician, Vilém Flusser, and renowned French artist, Louis Bec, focusing mostly on their collaboration on the book Vampyroteuthis Infernalis. The thesis analyzes first Vilém Flusser's work in the fields of media studies, theory of communication and cultural studies. Regarding Bec, the text deals with his bioart performances and with so called Zoosystémie. The thesis is briefly introduced by the outline of the theory of bioart and approaches towards it. The nucleus of the thesis is a detailed analysis of the aforementioned book and its main propositions, and the mutual influences between its respective authors.
