Children’s and adolescents’ interactions with online strangers

Abstract:

Disertace se zabývá interakcemi dětí a adolescentů s neznámými lidmi na internetu. Tato aktivita je typicky chápaná jako riziková, přestože empirický výzkum spíše ukazuje, že většina takových interakcí probíhá v pořádku: ani interakce na internetu, ani ty s přenosem do reality (osobní setkání) typicky nevedou k žádné újmě. Výzkum v této oblasti je nicméně spíše limitovaný a neposkytuje mnoho detailů o širším kontextu interakcí s neznámými lidmi, o preventivních opatřeních, která mladí lidé využívají , ani o reakcích mladých v průběhu takových interakcí. Disertace se soustředí na tyto mezery v současném výzkumu a zkoumá interakce mladých s neznámými lidmi do hloubky. Práce je založena na 5 publikacích: jedné teoretické kapitole a čtyřech empirických článcích, které využívají kvalitativní i kvantitativní design. Výsledky identifikují a popisují pestrost interakcí mladých s neznámými lidmi, které se dají zařadit do čtyř hlavních typů podle úrovně intenzity interakce: od pouhého uvědomění si přítomnosti neznámých lidí ve stejném kyberprostoru, přes iniciování kontaktu nebo obdržení zprávy nebo žádosti o přátelství od druhých, výměnu zpráv, po eventuální osobní setkání. Děti a adolescenti popisovali pozitivní i negativní zkušenosti na všech úrovních interakcí. Negativní ovšem typicky zahrnovaly jen malou újmu. Výsledky také ukazují, že mladí jsou aktivními spolu-účastníky ve všech typech interakcí: dělají rozhodnutí, která ovlivňují průběh celé interakce, hodnotí potenciální rizika a využívají různé preventivní strategie, aby rizikům předešli. Disertace tak obohacuje znalosti o interakcích s neznámými lidmi, a dále poskytuje implikace pro praxi a podněty pro další výzkum.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on children’s and adolescents’ interactions with unknown people from the internet, so-called “online strangers”. This activity is typically conceptualized as risky for youth, even though existing empirical research shows only partial support for the concerns: in the majority of cases, both communication online as well as face-to-face meetings do not result in harm. The research in this area is rather limited and does not provide many details about the broader context of youth interactions with online strangers, their preventive efforts when interacting with them, and their reactions during the interactions. This thesis aims to fill these gaps by examining youths’ experiences with online strangers in depth. It is based on five manuscripts: one theoretical chapter and four empirical papers, which utilize both qualitative and quantitative design. The findings identified and depicted the variety of interactions with online strangers that youth engage in. These interactions were grouped into four levels, ranging from merely acknowledging their existence, initiating/responding to the initiation of contact, exchanging messages, and an eventual face-to-face meeting. Youth reported both positive and negative experiences on all levels of interactions, with the negative experiences being mostly of little severity. The findings also show that youth are active partners in all four levels of interactions: they make decisions that affect the interaction’s course, evaluate the possible risks, and employ various preventive measures to ensure that the interaction will go smoothly. This thesis enriches the knowledge about youths’ interactions with online strangers, and provides implications for practical use, as well as future research.
