Legal Status of the České Budějovice Diocese at the Time of the Occupation

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se týká postavení českobudějovického biskupství v době německé okupace nacistickým režimem. Práce se bude nejdříve zabývat úvodem do problematiky vysvětlením základních pojmů a charakteristikou českobudějovické diecéze, dále se bude věnovat postavení diecézí za Rakouska-Uherska a Československa a stěžejními dokumenty právní úpravy. Po historickoprávním úvodu se bude práce zabývat již katolickou církví v letech 1939-1945, okupací a diecézí, a s tím spojenými osudy českobudějovických kněží a biskupů, jako byl biskup Šimon Bárta, kapitulní vikář Monsignore Cajs či biskup Josef Hlouch. Další kapitola bude pojednávat o osvobození a osudu německých kněží. Závěr bude obsahovat analýzu prozkoumané problematiky a odpověď na výzkumnou otázku. Cílem této diplomové práce je hlouběji probádat a podat ucelené informace o postavení českobudějovického biskupství v tomto nelehkém období, přiblížit osudy a poslání kněží a biskupů této diecéze a zhodnotit, jaký vliv to mělo na další vývoj instituce.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the position of the diocese of České Budějovice during the occupation by the German Nazi régime. The thesis includes an introduction with explanation of basic terms and characterization of the diocese of České Budějovice, as well as the position of dioceses in general in the Austrian-Hungarian era and in the Czechoslovak Republic, including the related key legislation. After the introduction about the history and legal framework the thesis addresses the situation of the Catholic Church and the diocese in 1939-1945 - in the course of the occupation; the theses includes personal stories of priests and bishops in the diocese of České Budějovice, e.g. the bishop Šimon Bárta, the vicar capitular Monsignor Cajs and the bishop Josef Hlouch. One chapter describes the liberation and fates of local German priests. The final part of the thesis analyzes the investigated topic and provides an answer to the research question. The objective of the thesis is to investigate deeper and to present comprehensive information about the position of the diocese of České Budějovice in those difficult years, to show the fates and missions of the priests and bishops in the diocese and to evaluate effects of the historical period on further development of the diocese.
