Voicing political opinions in different national cultures: A contrastive analysis of political parties´ websites in the UK/USA and the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je pokus o vytvoření celistvého obrazu a porovnání webů vládních stran Velké Británie a České Republiky: Konzervativní strany a Občanské demokratické strany. Důležitým aspektem práce je tak tedy především odhalit to, jakým způsobem strany z těchto odlišných zemí a kultur využívají své webové stránky a jejich jednotlivé prvky k persvazi, artikulaci svých názorů, sebeprezentaci či vytváření specifických vztahů s voliči. Za pomoci aplikace Pauwelsova (2012) modelu multimodální analýzy pro zkoumání online prostředí a teorií, které s tímto tématem korespondují, bylo zjistěno, že obě dvě politické strany spoláhají na vybrané elementy těchto stran - loga, design a vizuální prvky - pro naplnění výše vymezených účelů. Díky analýze těchto webových stran tak můžeme spatřit, že obě vládní strany taktéž spoléhají na strategie, které lze, až na některé výjimky, primárně určeny politicko-kulturními rozdíly či nedávným vývojem, považovat za identické. Další kroky analýzy navíc také dokazují, že estetické či dobře promyšlené budování webových stránek, jež pomáha těmto politickým stranám budovat jejich "image" či vztahy s elektorátem, však taktéž úzce souvisí i s tím, jakým způsobem jsou názory obou stran a jejich představitelů podpořeny i užíváním vybraných jazykových prostředků, které blíže zkoumá Fairclough (2001). Prostřednictvím pestré slovní zásoby i gramatických jevů totiž strany nejen posilují již zmíněné pouto se svými voliči, ale taktéž dávají na jevo i své zásadní postavení, které plyne z politické moci, jež je jim svěřena.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to attempt to create a holistic picture and a comparison of the websites belonging to the governmental parties of the UK and the Czech Republic: the Conservative Party and the Civic Democratic Party. Thus, an important aspect of the thesis is primarily to reveal how the parties from these countries and cultures use their websites and their individual elements for the act of persuasion, articulating their opinions, presenting themselves, or creating specific relationships with their voters. By applying Pauwels' (2012) model of multimodal analysis designed to explore these online environments, as well as the theories that correspond with this concept, it was found that the political parties rely on similar features - their logos, design, or visual elements - for achieving the above-mentioned purposes. By analyzing these websites, it is clear that both government parties also rely on strategies that, with some exceptions resulting from politico-cultural divergencies or recent developments, can be seen as identical. In addition, the consequent steps of the analysis also show that the aesthetic or well-thought-out structure of the websites that indeed aid the political parties in building their image or relations with their electorates, are also closely related to how the views of the two parties and their representatives are supported by the use of selected linguistic devices explored by Fairclough's (2001) analytical procedure. The parties, with the help of a great array of vocabulary choices and grammatical structures, therefore, not only strengthen the bonds with their supporters but also exercise the power that they have been handed.
