Factors influencing the measurement of the ZnO particle size distribution by the method of dynamic light scattering

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá měřením velikosti částic suspenzí ZnO. Hlavním cílem této práce bylo zjistit, jaký vliv mají na měření velikostní distribuce částic tyto faktory: vliv obsahu ZnO, vliv iontové síly, vliv pH a vliv použití ultrazvuku. Velikost částic suspenzí ZnO byla charakterizována technikou dynamického rozptylu světla (DLS). Největší vliv na měření velikosti částic měl obsah ZnO a použití ultrazvuku. Se zvyšujícím se obsahem ZnO byla distribuce velikosti částic suspenzí ZnO posunuta směrem k nižším hodnotám. Naopak měření velikosti částic ZnO nijak neovlivnila změna pH. Stabilita suspenzí byla zkoumána měřením zeta potenciálu technikou elektroforetického rozptylu světla (ELS). Suspenze ležely v oblasti zeta potenciálu od -30 mV do +30mV. Rozmezí hodnot zeta potenciálu od -30 mV do +30 mV je obecně považováno za nestabilní, proto se dá předpokládat, že v suspenzích ZnO docházelo ke koagulaci částic.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the measurement of the particle size of ZnO suspensions. The main goal of this thesis was to determine the influence of the ZnO content, ionic strength, pH and the influence of the use of ultrasound on the measurement of particle size distribution. The particle size of the ZnO suspensions was characterized by the dynamic light scattering (DLS) technique. The Zno content and the use of ultrasound had the greatest influence on the particle size measurement. With increasing ZnO content, the particle size distribution of ZnO suspensions shifted towards lower values. In contrast, the measurement of ZnO particle size was not affected by the change in pH. The stability of the suspensions was examined by measuring the zeta potential by electrophoretic light scattering (ELS). The suspensions were in the zeta potential range from -30 mV to +30 mV. The range of zeta potential values from -30 mV to +30 mV is generally considered to be unstable, therefore it can be assumed that particles coagulated in ZnO suspensions.
