On Personal Redemption: The Thematic Analysis of Oscar Wilde’s De Profundis

Anotácia:

Cílem této práce je ponořit se do tématu osobního vykoupení v nejdůležitějším nefiktivním psaní Oscara Wilda po soudním procesu – osobním dopise napsaném během jeho uvěznění v Reading Jail – De Profundis. Abychom hlouběji pochopili postavu Oscara Wilda, tato práce se zaměřuje na život Oscara Wilda, jeho bouřlivé procesy, následovné uvěznění a ostrakizaci prostřednictvím biografií a dopisů. Oscar Wilde využívá introspekci a provádí pečlivé sebezkoumání, které pojednává o motivech, jako je utrpení a přijetí v De Profundis, a využívá svou zkušenost ve vězení k dosažení osobního růstu a vykoupení, navzdory hrůzám, které prožil ve viktoriánské společnosti a jejím vězeňském systému.

Abstract:

The objective of this thesis is to delve into the theme of personal redemption in Oscar Wilde’s most important post-trial non-fictive writing – a personal letter written during his incarceration in Reading Jail - De Profundis. To provide more context into Oscar Wilde, this thesis focuses on Oscar Wilde’s life, turbulent trials, and following incarceration and ostracism through biographies and letters. Oscar Wilde uses introspection and conducts a careful self-examination which discusses motifs such as suffering and acceptance in De Profundis, and utilizes his prison experience to gain personal growth and redemption, despite the horrors he endured within the Victorian society and its prison system.
