How We Read: The Reception of the Beat Generation in the United States and the Czech Lands

Abstract:

Tato disertace dokumentuje recepci tzv. Beat Generation autorů a jejich děl ve Spojených státech amerických a v Česku, tedy v Československu a České republice, a to ve dvou časových obdobích – v 50. a 60. letech minulého století a v současnosti. Skrze analýzu této recepce umožňuje disertace lépe porozumět tomu, jak se formuje chápání subjektů poznání. Reakce vůči Beat Generation autorům byly velmi silné, ať už byly pozitivní nebo negativní. V USA na ně bylo často nahlíženo jako na zosobnění étosu mladé generace, zatímco jiní v nich viděli velkou hrozbu celé společnosti. Beat Generation autoři často psali o „druhé“ Americe, což spolu s jejich častým zobrazováním užívání drog či homosexuality bylo v protipólu tehdejším konvencím. Toto znázorňování běžně vedlo k velmi vyhraněným názorům na Beat Generation spisovatele, zatímco jejich díla jako taková šla stranou, což ve výsledku zapříčinilo chápání těchto autorů převážně jako sociologický fenomén. Naopak v Československu čtenáři viděli v těchto autorech něco velmi vzácného v tehdejší společnosti – kritické hlasy neovlivněné přílišným lpěním na určité ideologii. Kritika americké společnosti Beat Generation autory – kritika konformismu, konzumerismu, útlaku společnosti či omezené myšlení – byla pro mnohé opravdu inspirativní a měla na české čtenáře dlouhotrvající vliv. I přes různé kontroverze a problémy minulosti jsou Beat Generation spisovatelé v současnosti populárnější než v době svých nejslavnějších publikací. Američtí čtenáři oslavují tyto spisovatele za jejich vzepření se konzervativním hodnotám senátorem McCarthym ovlivněné Ameriky a za jejich značný vliv na budoucí generace. Stali se důležitými kulturními ikonami, které zosobňují kvality jako například nekonformnost, antikapitalismus či ekologické cítění. Podobného statutu dosáhli tito autoři i v České republice, kde jsou často znázorňování jako vyjádření americké touhy po svobodě. Konkrétněji řečeno, odlišné recepce ukazují, jak kontext a existující diskurs formuluje svůj subjekt, což často vede k odlišnému ztvárnění daného subjektu. Diskurs kolem Beat Generation autorů v USA se často soustřeďuje na jejich historickou roli hlasu mladé generace, čímž zdůrazňuje jejich kulturně-společenský vliv, což ve výsledku napomáhá chápání těchto spisovatelů jako kulturních ikon. České chápání Beat Generation spisovatelů často opomíjí toto čtení a místo toho jsou znázorňováni jako kritici komunismu či kapitalismu, tedy kritici ideologií. Disertace se skládá z několika kapitol. 1. kapitola vysvětluje téma disertace a prezentuje její strukturu. 2. kapitola obsahuje přehled literární teorie relevantní pro tuto práci a také vysvětluje použitou metodologii. 3. kapitola poskytuje základní profil americké společnosti v 50. a 60. letech minulého století. Prvotní recepce Beat Generation autorů v USA je dokumentována v 4. kapitole. Tato kapitola se nejdříve zaobírá recenzemi děl Jacka Kerouaca, poté pokračuje diskuzí populárních ztvárnění Beat Generation autorů. Po zdokumentování zobrazování Williama S. Burroughse přechází tato kapitola k tzv. akademické poezii a Novým kritikům a jejich vztahu k Beat Generation autorům. Současná recepce těchto autorů je analyzována v 5. kapitole. Nejdříve se soustředí na jejich všeobecné znázorňování, poté přechází k nekrologům, kritickým interpretacím a končí současnou kritikou. 6. kapitola znázorňuje život v Československu 50. a 60. let, soustřeďujíc se převážně na definici socialistického realismu a na důležité historické mezníky v tomto období. 7. kapitola obsahuje detailní vysvětlení recepce Beat Generation autorů v Československu. říve analyzuje články v literárním periodiku Světová literatura, poté pokračuje poukázáním na změnu rétoriky v těchto článcích, a nakonec končí rozborem návštěvy Allena Ginsberga v roce 1965 a vlivu Beat Generation autorů obecně. Současná recepce je vysvětlena v 8. kapitole. Tato kapitola nejdříve zkoumá různé předmluvy či doslovy, tedy materiály dodané vydavateli k dílům Beat Generation, poté se zaměřuje hlavně na analýzu návštěvy Lawrence Ferlinghettiho v roce 1998 a porovnáním Beat Generation autorů s umělci československého undergroundu. Podstata současného kritického přístupu k Beat Generation spisovatelům je také diskutována. Práce končí 9. a 10. kapitolou, které vyvozují závěry z analyzovaného materiálu pomocí teoretických konceptů z 2. kapitoly. Tato disertace přináší porozumění do způsobu, kterým jsou literární texty a jejich autoři spoluvytvářeni na základě kulturních a historických profilů, existujícího diskursu, či použitých interpretačních strategiích čtenářů.

Abstract:

The dissertation documents the reception of the Beat Generation writers and their work in the United States and the Czech lands, that is Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic, in two different time periods – the 1950s/1960s and today. Subsequently, by analyzing the differences and similarities between the receptions, the dissertation comments on how an understanding of a subject is formed. The Beats initially elicited strong responses, both favorable and unfavorable. In their home country they were often seen as representing the ethos of the young generation; in contrast, others saw them as a dangerous threat to the whole society. The Beats, with their focus on the Other America and their portrayal of drug use or homosexuality certainly did not respect the norms of the time. This then led to extremely polarizing views of the Beats in which their writing often took a back seat. As a result, the Beats were often viewed as a social phenomenon rather than writers. In contrast, their readers in Czechoslovakia saw in the Beats something extremely uncommon in their own society – critical voices uninhibited by overt ideological allegiance. The general critique of the Beats – the criticism of conformity, consumerism, oppressive behavior or institutionalized thinking – was for many truly inspiring and had left a lasting impression in the country. Despite various controversies and difficulties, the Beats are currently more popular than at the time of their writing. American audiences hail the Beats for standing against the conservative mores of McCarthy’s America and for significantly altering the consciousness of future generations. They have become important cultural icons embodying various qualities and ideals such as non-conformity, anti-capitalism or ecology advocacy. Similarly, the Beats have reached similar status in the Czech Republic, being often portrayed as embodying the American desire for freedom. In more specific terms, the different receptions show how context and existing discourse frames the subject, thus embodying it with different qualities. The discourse surrounding the Beats in the United States focuses on their history as voices of a generation, therefore emphasizing their impact on American society, which as a result helps them shape into cultural icons. In contrast, the Czech reading of the Beats mostly lacks this generational reading, focusing instead on them as critics of Communism and Capitalism, that is critics of ideologies. The dissertation consists of the following chapters. Chapter 1 explains the topic of the dissertation and presents its structure. Chapter 2 provides an overview of literary theory relevant to the dissertation and the methodology used. Chapter 3 presents background information to the United States of the 1950s and 1960s. Chapter 4 documents the initial reception of the Beat Generation in the United States. The chapter first focuses the reviews of Jack Kerouac’s work, and then continues by discussing the popular representation of the Beats. After commenting on the portrayal of William S. Burroughs, the chapter finishes by discussing academic poetry, the New Critics and their relationship to the Beats. Chapter 5 analyzes the current reception of the Beats by focusing on popular representations, obituaries and critical interpretations. In addition, the criticism of the Beats is also discussed. Chapter 6 portrays the culture of Czechoslovakia, focusing mostly on socialist realism and the historical developments of the period. Chapter 7 provides a detailed account of the reception of the Beats in Czechoslovakia. It does so by first analyzing the studies in the literary journal Světová literatura, then continues by discussing the shift in rhetoric in these studies, and finishes by an overview of Allen Ginsberg’s 1965 visit and the effects the Beats had on Czechoslovakia. The current reception of the Beats in the Czech Republic is the focus of Chapter 8. The section first analyzes

various introductory materials of Beat publications, and then continues by focusing mostly on Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s 1998 visit and the comparison between the Beats and Czechoslovak underground. The nature of Czech scholarship is also discussed. Finally, Chapters 9 and 10 provide an analysis of the documented reception by applying the theoretical concepts from Chapter 2. The dissertation provides an insight into the manner literary text and their writers are formed into different shapes based on cultural and historical background, existing discourse, or the reading strategies of the audience.
