From a Dialogue Full of Holes to a Sacred Conversation: The Notion of Language in Selected Works by Janice Kulyk Keefer

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá pojetím jazyka ve vybraném díle současné kanadské autorky Janice Kulyk Keefer, a to konkrétně v románu The Green Library, v memoáru Honey and Ashes: A Story of a Family a ve sbírce poezie Marrying the Sea. Z analyzovaného díla vyplývá celé jazykové kontinuum, které sahá od jazyků pracujících se slovy, přes jazyky těla či přírody až k jazyku posvátnému, přičemž každá úroveň jazyka řeší nedokonalosti úrovně předcházející. Koncept jazyka je studován v rámci zkušenosti ukrajinských emigrantů žijících v Kanadě, ta je totiž důležitou součástí jak příběhů analyzovaných děl, tak historie autorčiny rodiny, kterou se nechala při své tvorbě inspirovat. Jazyk je nejprve prozkoumán v kontextu lidské potřeby sebevyjádření, osobní identity a pocitu náležení, a ve spojitosti s mocí, která je skrz jazyk uplatňována. Ukazuje se, že jazyk může být zdrojem studu, výsměchu či problémů způsobených například rozhodnutími vlád týkajících se nepohodlných jazyků. V další části se věnuji tématu jazyků použitých v komunikaci a s tím souvisejícím podtématům – jazykovým bariérám a otázce (ne)možnosti překladu mezi jednotlivými jazyky. Následně jsou probádány různé alternativní jazyky, s cílem nalézt jazyk, který by nebyl tak problematický jako jazyky založené na slovech. Pozornost je věnována rozličným jazykům těla, jazykům skutků, symbolů a instinktů, a také jazykům, které mohou lidé sdílet se zvířaty a přírodou. Závěrem se zabývám konceptem posvátného jazyka. Tento jazyk je zcela bez omezení; může být použit i pro komunikaci s mrtvými či nepřítomnými, a některé jeho rysy se shodují s charakteristikami nebe v křesťanském pojetí.

Abstract:

In this thesis the concept of language in three works by Janice Kulyk Keefer is analyzed. These are namely the novel The Green Library, the memoir Honey and Ashes: A Story of a Family and the collection of poetry Marrying the Sea. A whole language continuum is discovered, which stretches from word-languages over body languages and languages of nature to a sacred language, while each level of language responds to and solves the imperfections of the previous level. The underlying context of this analysis is the experience of Ukrainian emigrants who have come to Canada, as this is an important topic in the analyzed books as well as a part of Keefer’s family’s history which, as the author herself reflects, has influenced her in her writing. Firstly, languages are examined with regard to one’s need of self-expression, one’s identity and belonging and the power connected to language. It is shown that languages are a potential source of shame, ridicule, and troubles caused by the state resolutions on unwelcome languages. Secondly, languages as employed in communication are dealt with, together with the resulting issues of language barriers and untranslatability between languages. Finally, the potential of alternative languages are explored, with the aim to find a communication code that would not be as fragile as the word-languages. Various body languages, languages of deeds, symbols and instincts are analyzed, as well as languages that people may share with animals and nature. The concept of a sacred language is eventually proposed. This language has no limitations, can be used for communication with the absent or the dead, and some of its characteristics are identical with the characteristics of heaven in the Christian tradition.
