The Effect of Anxiety on Reading Effectiveness and Efficiency

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá vliv úzkosti na čtení v teoretickém rámci teorie kontroly pozornosti (attentional control theory). Jedná se o 2 × 2 smíšený experimentální design. Jedinci s vysokou a nízkou mírou úzkostnosti četli strukturálně náročné texty pod ego-ohrožujícími a neutrálními pokyny. Metoda eye-trackingu byla použita pro online měření pohybů očí při čtení. Čtecí regrese byly vypočítány na základě jednoduchých událostí pohybů očí za použití vlastního softwarového programu. Čtenáři se nelišili v míře porozumění, ale úzkost měla signifikantní efekt na čtecí regrese. Úzkostní jedinci strávili více času na regresích než účastníci s nízkou úzkostností v obou podmínkách. Doplňková explorativní analýza dráhy pohledu očí při regresním čtení ukázala na významnou variabilitu regresních vzorců. Rozdíly v regresních vzorcích naznačují použití odlišných strategií v čtecích úlohách. Diskuse projednává možná alternativní vysvětlení pozorovaného efektu a vyvozuje implikace pro budoucí výzkum.

Abstract:

In this thesis, the effects of anxiety on reading are examined within the framework of the attentional control theory (ACT). The study is a 2 × 2 mixed experimental design. High and low-anxious subjects read structurally difficult texts under ego-threatening and neutral instructions. Eye tracking was used to measure their eye-movements during reading and regressions were computed on the basis of single eye-movement events using a tailored software program. There was no difference in readers’ comprehension, but high anxious individuals spent significantly more time on regressions than low-anxious subjects in both conditions. An additional qualitative exploration of regression scanpaths revealed significant variation in regressive reading patterns and differences indicating the use of various reading strategies. Alternative explanations of the observed effect of anxiety on reading regressions and implications for future research are discussed.
