Stanislas-André Steeman: from whodunit to noir fiction through the protagonists

Abstract:

Here presented bachelor thesis describes the evolution which we can observe in the style of writing of a Belgian author of detective novels, Stanislas-André Steeman (1908-1970), from the perspective of a literary evolution of the detective genre itself, i.e. from whodunit (roman à énigme), through suspense to roman noir. The description of this evolution is based on an analysis of four principal characters in crime fiction, findable in four chosen novels, such are investigator, culpable, victim and suspect. Based on a theoretical support, the objective of this work is to determine to which one of three previously mentioned subcategories of the detective novel its four main protagonists do belong. Through the pursuit of this target, the ambition of this analysis is to prove that S.-A. Steeman’s style of writing is marked by an evolution which is known in the genre of detective fiction in general, i. e. from a type of novel with strict rules (roman à énigme) evolving to their partial renouncement (roman noir). Besides this analysis, this bachelor thesis attempts to briefly familiarize its readers with the universe of detective fiction in what regards its literal-historical background. Last but not least, this work contains a chapter concerning the biography and the literary career of S.-A. Steeman.

Zde prezentovaná bakalářská práce pojednává o vývoji stylu psaní belgického spisovatele detektivních příběhů Stanislava-Andrého Steemana (1908-1970) a to z hlediska literárního vývoje detektivního žánru: od románu v uzavřeném prostředí (roman à énigme), přes thriller až po „roman noir". Tento vývoj se snaží postihnout na základě analýz čtyř základních aktantů detektivních příběhů ze čtyř vybraných románů: vyšetřovatele, pachatele, oběti a podezřelého. Cílem této práce je, na základě dostupné teoretické literatury, určit příslušnost těchto čtyř základních postav detektivních románů do jedné ze tří jeho podkategorií jmenovaných výše, a takto dokázat, že styl psaní S.-A. Steemana prošel stejným vývojem, jak se tomu událo i v detektivním žánru : od typu románu s pevně danými konturami (roman à énigme) až po postupné opuštění od sevřených pravidel žánru (roman noir). Kromě zmiňované analýzy se diplomová práce snaží přiblížit svým čtenářům svět detektivních románů i pomocí kapitoly, která ve stručnosti mapuje vývoj detektivky z hlediska literárně historického. V neposlední řadě obsahuje práce kapitolu pojednávající o životě a literární dráze S.-A. Steemana.
