The loss of meaning and anti-heroism in the works of Michel Houellebecq

Abstract:

This Bachelor's Thesis focuses on the theme of loss of sense and anti-heroism in the work of Michel Houellebecq, in his three novels Atomised, The Possibility of an Island and The Map and the Territory, and examines the way Houellebecq demonstrates the deconstruction of the traditional pillars of western society, such as family, religion or romantic relationships. The analysis is based on ideas of American philosopher Ernest Becker as summarized in his work The Denial of death which provide a deeper understanding of Houellebecq´s own worldview. The aim of the thesis is to inquire into the way Michel Houellebecq portrays the demise of heroism and traditional values in the generation of May 68 and in the contemporary western society as such and to examine the author's opinions on its influence on the human psyche, interpersonal relationships and society in general.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na tématiku ztráty smyslu a anti-hrdinství v díle Michela Houellebecqua, konkrétně v jeho románech Elementární částice, Možnost ostrova a Mapa a území a zkoumá jakým způsobem Houellebecq poukazuje na dekonstrukci tradičních pilířů západní civilizace jako je rodina, náboženství či romantické vztahy. Analýza díla Michela Houellebecqua je prováděna na pozadí myšlenek amerického filozofa Ernesta Beckera, které jsou shrnuté v jeho díle The Denial of death a se kterými má Houellebecqův světonázor mnoho společného. Cílem práce je poukázat na úpadek heroizmu a tradičních hodnot, které Michel Houellebecq identifikuje jak u francouzské generace ovlivněné událostmi máje 68, tak u celé současné západní civilizace, a prozkoumat jaký je podle autora jejich dopad na lidskou psychiku, mezilidské vztahy a společnost jako celek.
