Ageing quiz: a dynamics of stereotypes about ageing

Abstract:

Tato práce sleduje zobrazování stárnutí/stáří/seniorů v kvízech Ageing/Aging Quiz, které lze nalézt na internetu. Tyto kvízy jsou sestaveny z nejběžnějších představ o stáří a stárnutí, které jsou většinou laděny stereotypně až negativně, a jsou využívány pro testování gerontologické gramotnosti, jejíž význam vzhledem ke stárnoucí populaci roste. Je pravděpodobné, že gerontologicky gramotný jedinec je lépe připraven na vlastní stárnutí, a jeho postoje k (současným) seniorům nejsou tolik ovlivněny (negativními) stereotypy. Cílem prezentace je nabídnout analýzu mýtů problematizovaných v zahraničních „Ageing Quiz“ a představení jeho českého ekvivalentu. Práce je sekundární analýzou veřejně dostupných kvízů zaměřených na vnímání stáří a očekávání toho, co stáří přináší. Tvrzení, která se v kvízech často opakují, jsou konfrontována s literaturou, a jejich ne/platnost také ověřena sekundární analýzou dat na české populaci. Ukazuje se, že některé představy o stáří, stárnutí a seniorech jsou přetrvávajícími mýty. Se stářím často spojovaná slova jako „většina seniorů“, „téměř všichni senioři“ apod. jsou používána mnohdy neadekvátně, a jejich použití je relativní a homogenizující. Toto zjištění je platné i pro české seniory. Zaměření více pozornosti na toto téma a zlepšování gerontologické gramotnosti bude v budoucnu užitečné a potřebné. Práce obsahuje 126 819 znaků.

Abstract:

This work follows the imaging aging/age/seniors in quizzes (ie. Ageing/Aging Quiz), which can be found on the Internet. These quizzes are compiled from the most common ideas about age and aging that are usually tuned stereotyped or negatively and they are used for testing gerontological literacy whose importance grows because of aging of population. It is probable that the gerontological literate individual is better prepared for their own aging, and his attitude towards (current) seniors are less affected by the (negative) stereotypes. The aim of the presentation is to provide an analysis of myths discused in foreign "Ageing Quiz" and presenting its Czech equivalent. The work is a secondary analysis of publicly available quizzes focused on perceptions and expectations about the old age. Oft-repeated assertions are confronted with literature and their validity or invalidity is also verified by secondary data analysis on the Czech population. It shows that some of the ideas about old age, aging and seniors are persistent myths. With aging often associated words like "most seniors," "almost all seniors" etc. are often used inappropriately, and their use is relative and homogenizing. This finding is also valid for the Czech seniors. Focus more attention on this issue and improve the gerontological literacy will be useful and necessary in future.
