The Native American Church: Roots, Development and the Modern Form of the Peyote Cult

Abstract:

This thesis studies spirituality of the Native American Church. The beginnings of the phenomenon called "Peyotism" among Native inhabitants of the Mexico, which serves as the basis for the cult, are discussed. It deals with development of the church and its contemporary form in the United States. The focus is on constitutive elements of the cult, two most important and widely spread factions altogether with their founders and proselytisers, and on the Peyote cactus, standing at the core of the movement. This thesis discusses struggles of peyotists for establishment of a legal church statue as well as efforts of those opposing the religious cult.

Diplomová práce se zabývá spiritualitou Církve původních Američanů (Native American Church). Zkoumá počátky fenoménu zvaného "peyotism" mezi domorodými obyvateli Mexika, na němž tato církev stojí. Práce se zaměřuje na vývoj církve i její současnou formu a funkci ve Spojených státech amerických. Dále se zaobírá jednotlivými elementy víry, dvěma hlavními moderními proudy, jejich zakladateli a propagátory, stejně jako i samotným kaktusem Peyote, jehož užívání tvoří jádro celého hnutí. Práce představuje jednak zákulisí právního vzniku církve, jednak snahy nedomorodých občanů USA o zničení a zastavení tohoto náboženského hnutí.
