Cockney English in a Historical Perspective

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá variantou anglického jazyka zvanou Cockney English. Popisuje její historický vývoj, její hlavní rysy a zamýšlí se nad jejím současným stavem. Úvod této práce zahrnuje hlavní otázky, na které má tato práce odpovědět a je v něm obsažen její krátký popis. Následující kapitola objasňuje termín ‘Cockney’ a vývoj anglického jazyka ve Velké Británii od desátého století. Zabývá se rolí Cockney English během vývoje standardní angličtiny a výslovnosti (Received Pronunciation). Je zde také vysvětleno, proč je Cockney English spojována především s dělnickou třídou obyvatelstva. Dále jsou popsány hlavní jazykové rysy Cockney – výslovnost, gramatika a Cockney rhyming slang. Cockney však není pouze způsob řeči, ale také druh kultury. Ta je popsána v následující kapitole. Další část této práce se zabývá vývojem australské angličtiny. Cockney bylo široce rozšířeno mezi prvními obyvateli Austrálie, a proto ovlivnilo angličtinu tohoto kontinentu. Poslední kapitola se věnuje současnému stavu Cockney English. Představuje novou normu výslovnosti, která se vyvinula v Anglii (Estuary English) a vlivy působící na Cockney English, jako například migrace, které zapříčiňují úpadek této varianty angličtiny. Tato kapitola se také snaží předpovědět budoucnost Cockney English.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis focuses on the variety of English called Cockney English. It explains its historical development, describes the features of this variety in detail and discusses its current situation. The introduction includes the main questions that are to answer and there is a short description of the whole thesis. The following chapter explains the term ‘Cockney’ and the development of English in Great Britain since the 10th century. It discusses the role of Cockney English during the development of Standard English and the emergence of Received Pronunciation. It also explains why has been Cockney seen as a language of the working classes. Main features of Cockney are described further - the pronunciation, grammar and Cockney rhyming slang. However, Cockney is not only the way of speech, there is also culture connected with it, which is dealt with in the following chapter. Next part of the thesis deals with the development of Australian English. Cockney was widely spread among the people who settled Australia and therefore it had great influence on the English spoken on this continent. The last chapter discusses the current situation of Cockney English. It presents the new norm of pronunciation that has emerged in England – Estuary English, and the influences on Cockney English, such as migration, that cause the decline of this variety of English. This chapter also tries to predict the future of Cockney English.
