Farmaceutický průmysl - Náklady na R&D a jejich vliv na profitabilitu a tržní hodnotu firmy

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je zjistit, zda existuje vztah mezi náklady na výzkum a vývoj (R&D) a profitabilitou, respektive tržní hodnotou, a to konkrétně u firem působících ve farmaceutickém průmyslu. Tento vztah je zkoumán použitím lineární regresní analýzy na statistickém vzorku obsahujícím data za pětileté období pro každou z patnácti vybraných předních světových farmaceutických firem, zaměřených právě na výzkum a vývoj. Z výsledků této regresní analýzy vyplývá, že existuje relativně slabá, nicméně statisticky významná lineární závislost mezi úrovní nákladů na výzkum a vývoj a profitabilitou či tržní hodnotou těchto firem, pokud měřeno ukazateli jako je 'Return on Sales', 'Return on Assets', a 'Price-to-Sales'. Nicméně, co se týká ukazatelů 'Return on Equity' nebo 'Price-to-Book Value', statisticky významná závislost nebyla potvrzena. Na základě zkoumaného vzorku dat bylo vyvozeno, že je velmi limitovaná možnost pro zvýšení profitability či tržní hodnoty farmaceutických firem se zaměřením na výzkum a vývoj pouhým navýšením R&D výdajů.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to examine whether there is a positive relationship between pharmaceutical firms' investments in research and development (R&D) and their profitability as well as market value. This is achieved by employing the simple linear regression analysis, based on sample data gathered over five-year period per each of the fifteen selected leading research-based pharmaceutical companies. The results show that there is statistically significant but relatively weak linear association between level of R&D expenditures and firms' profitability and market value, if measured by Return on Sales, Return on Assets, or Price-to-Sales ratios. Nevertheless, no significant link was identified in case of level of R&D investments and Return on Equity, or Price-to-Book Value ratio. Thus, overall, based on the sample data analyzed, it can be concluded that there is a very limited potential for boosting research-based pharmaceutical firm's profitability as well as market value solely by increasing its R&D expenditures.
