Changes of theory and methodology in Cognitive Religion: From programmatic approach to empirical research in the laboratory

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce bude věnována dějinám kognitivního studia náboženství v Brně. Kognitivní přístup ke studiu náboženství má v Brně relativně krátkou historii, ale během ní se již podařilo dosáhnout významných výsledků částečně v oblasti samotného bádání, ale zejména pak v rozvíjení dobře fungující badatelské infrastruktury. Dnes je kognitivní studium náboženství na FF MU spojeno s činností Laboratoře experimentálního výzkumu náboženství (LEVYNA) při Ústavu religionistiky. LEVYNA je zároveň významným aktérem při zakládání laboratorní infrastruktury pro experimentální výzkum lidského chování v rámci projektu tzv. HUMElabu jako servisního pracoviště sloužícího celé Filozofické fakultě. Základním východiskem práce je pozorování, že počátky kognitivní vědy v Brně byly charakterizovány projektově-propagačním přístupem, v němž šlo především o mapování a ujasňování si možností kognitivního studia náboženství a jeho propagaci. Toto období bylo úspěšně završeno právě vznikem laboratoře experimentálního výzkumu. S ním je spojeno nové nasměrování činnosti k experimentálně orientované výzkumné práci, což sebou ovšem nese nové typy problémů a nové výzvy. Povaha kognitivní vědy o náboženství v Brně se v důsledku toho velmi pravděpodobně musela v mnoha ohledech proměnit. Na základě tohoto předpokladu tedy bude v práci sledována publikační činnost (v širokém smyslu od přednášek pro studenty, konferenčních vystoupení po časopisecké studie) odborníků rozvíjejících při brněnském Ústavu religionistiky kognitivní přistup ke studiu náboženství a kultury a analytická pozornost bude zaměřována na proměny narativních přístupů, problémové orientace a teoretického a metodologického zaměření těchto publikací. Zároveň tyto předpokládané proměny budou sledovány v souvislostech s institucionálním rozvojem kognitivně orientovaného bádání a výuky. Práce tak bude drobným příspěvkem k porozumění procesu utváření normální vědy v dnešním systému věd na západních univerzitách. V této souvislosti bude mít podobu případové studie.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis will be devoted to the history of the cognitive study of religion in Brno. Cognitive approach to the study of religion in Brno has a relatively short history, but already achieved some significant results in the research itself, especially in developing well-functioning research infrastructure. Today, the cognitive study of religion at Masaryk University is associated with the activities of the Laboratory of experimental research on religion (LEVYNA) at the Institute of Religious Studies. LEVYNA is also a major player in establishing laboratory infrastructure for experimental research of human behavior as part of a project called HUMElab as a service facility serving the entire Faculty of Arts. The fundamental basis of this work is the observation that the origins of cognitive science in Brno were characterized by project-promotional approach, which was mainly the mapping and clarifying the possibilities of cognitive study of religion and its promotion. This period was successfully completed with the emergence of the laboratory of experimental research. With him is associated to reorientation to activities experimentally oriented research work, which, however, brings new types of problems and new challenges. The nature of the cognitive science of religion in Brno is consequently very likely had in many ways to turn. Based on this assumption, therefore, will work monitored publications (in the broad sense of lectures for students and conference appearances after journal studies) of experts emerging at the Brno Institute of Religion cognitive approach to the study of religion and culture and analytical attention will be directed towards the transformation of narrative approaches, problem orientation and theoretical and methodological focus of these publications. At the same time, these anticipated changes will be monitored in the context of institutional development cognitively oriented research and teaching. Work will be small contribution to understanding the formation process of normal science in today's system science at Western universities. In this connection takes the form of case studies.
