The Realization of Face-Threatening Acts in the UK Prime Minister's Questions from the Perspective of Politeness Theory

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje zdvořilosti ve smyslu teoretického pojmu v rámci pragmatiky a aplikaci teoretických modelů zdvořilosti na specifický institucionální diskurz, který představují interpelace na britského premiéra (Prime Minister's Questions). Hlavním cílem bylo posouzení realizace mluvních aktů ohrožujících tvář (FTAs) ve vztahu k zdvořilostním strategiím navrhnutým Brownovou a Levinsonem. Diskurz je jedinečným způsobem formován specifickými faktory danými kontextem, zejména veřejnou povahou projevů, pozitivní versus negativní zaujatostí vůči vládě a existencí pravidel upravujících průběh komunikace. Zatímco pozitivní zdvořilostní strategie popsané Brownovou a Levinsonem slouží k zmírnění dopadu mluvních aktů ohrožujících tvář komunikačního partnera, rétorické strategie, mimo jiné rétorické otázky, zevšeobecnění, využívání citací a ironie, které odpovídají negativním zdvořilostním strategiím a tzv.netransparentním (off-record) strategiím, slouží primárně k ochraně tváře mluvčího.

Abstract:

The thesis is concerned with politeness as a theoretical concept within pragmatics and with application of theoretical descriptions to a specific institutional discourse represented by the Prime Minister's Questions. The main focus is on the realization of face-threatening acts with respect to the use of politeness strategies outlined by Brown and Levinson. The discourse is intriguingly shaped by specific contextual factors, such as the public nature of the discourse, the assumption of positive vs negative bias towards the Government, and procedural rules governing the interaction. Brown and Levinson's positive politeness strategies are used to redress the impact of FTAs on the interlocutors face, whereas essentially rhetorical strategies corresponding to Brown and Levinson's negative politeness and off-record strategies, such as rhetorical questions, overgeneralizations, exploitation of quotes, and irony are primarily used to pursue the speaker's self-protection.
