The Victorian Madwoman: Female Hysteria and Madness in Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea

Abstract:

This thesis examines the portrayal of madness and hysteria of Victorian women in literary works Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre and Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea. With the use of Freudian psychoanalysis, the research aims to understand how societal expectations and understanding of mental illnesses shaped perceptions of women's mental health during this era and the way it is portrayed in literature, following Bertha Mason's decline into madness. By studying these literary works, this thesis seeks to reveal and analyze the different aspects that shaped the portrayal of women struggling with mental illnesses. The connection between madness and hysteria, along with Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic approach to hysteria, and Victorian beliefs about mental illnesses are examined, as well as the societal conventions of the Victorian era that shaped the perception and portrayal of female madness. Additionally, the refusal to conform to the Victorian image of an ideal woman is analyzed, along with the repression of feelings, desires, and female sexuality that comes with it. This investigation into the relationship between societal norms, the perception of mental illnesses in females in the Victorian era, and the rejection of conformity, promises insights into the portrayal of Victorian women affected by mental illnesses.

Tato práce zkoumá zobrazení šílenství a hysterie viktoriánských žen v literárních dílech Jana Eyrová od Charlotte Brontëové a Širé Sargasové Moře od Jean Rhysové. S využitím Freudovské psychoanalýzy si výzkum klade za cíl porozumět tomu, jak společenská očekávání a chápání duševních nemocí utvářelo vnímání duševního zdraví žen v této době a jak je líčeno v literatuře využitím příkladu Berthy Masonové a jejího propuknutí šílenství. Studiem těchto literárních děl se tato práce snaží odhalit a analyzovat různé aspekty, které formovaly zobrazení žen bojujících s duševními chorobami. Je zkoumána souvislost mezi šílenstvím a hysterií spolu s psychoanalytickým přístupem Sigmunda Freuda k hysterii, a také jsou zkoumána viktoriánská přesvědčení o duševních chorobách, a stejně jako i společenské konvence viktoriánské éry, které formovaly vnímání a zobrazování ženského šílenství. Dále je také analyzováno odmítnutí přizpůsobit se viktoriánské představě ideální ženy, spolu s potlačováním pocitů, tužeb a ženské sexuality, které s tímto ideálem souvisí. Toto zkoumání vztahu mezi společenskými normami, vnímáním duševních nemocí u žen ve viktoriánské době a odmítáním konformity nabízí vhled do tématiky zobrazení viktoriánských žen postižených duševními chorobami.
