Gift Economy and Reciprocity in Romantic Relationships

Abstract:

Táto práca ilustruje, akým spôsobom sa ekonomika daru prejavuje v romantických vzťahoch prostredníctvom mechanizmu reciprocity. Z prehľadu sociologickej literatúry predkladá argument, že táto ekonomika nie je len zastaraným spôsobom výmeny. Naopak, "darovanie" môže predstavovať prostriedok, pomocou ktorého opúšťame rozsiahle transakčné rámce modernity s jej predpokladmi nepretržitej kalkulácie, racionalizácie a individualizmu. Táto štúdia podporená mikro-etnografickými zisteniami ďalej objasňuje, akým spôsobom zodpovedá princípom ekonomiky daru starostlivosť, a podnecuje holistickú analýzu (ne)materiálnych interpretácií daru. Spochybňuje tiež normatívne predstavy, podľa ktorých sa naše vzťahy riadia výlučne spontánnosťou a intuíciou. Tým, že ekonomika daru produkuje stimuly na udržiavanie reciprocity v našich partnerstvách, formuje aj naše intimity, pričom prepája individualizáciu a altruizmus. Napokon, za cieľom vyhnúť sa častej romantizácií tejto ekonomiky, práca tematizuje ekonomické nerovnosti a poukazuje aj na "temnú stránku" daru.

Abstract:

This thesis illustrates how the gift economy manifests itself in romantic relationships through the mechanism of reciprocity. From a review of sociological literature, I argue that this economy is not just an outdated mode of exchange. Rather, ‘gifting’ constitutes a means of escaping sweeping transactional frameworks of modernity with their calculative, rationalised and individualistic premises. Sustained by micro-ethnographic findings, this study reveals how care adheres to gift economy principles, suggesting reasons to analyse (im)material gift interpretations holistically. The project challenges normative views that our relationships are guided purely by spontaneity and intuition. By producing incentives to sustain our partners in reciprocity, the gift economy shapes our intimacies, bridging individualisation and altruism. Finally, in avoiding the gift economy’s romantic appeal, I consider the economic inequalities outlined by gifting’s ‘dark side’.
