Anglo-Saxon Identity and Old English Poetics in Contemporary English Music

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá literární inspirace současných anglických interpretů z hudební oblasti, zejména pak ty kapely, jenž patří do metalového a neofolkového žánru. V práci tedy budou probádána témata vztahující se k pradávným archetypům a starogermánským bohům. Stejně tak budou analyzovány texty ovlivněné staroanglickými epickými básněmi a to – mimo jiné – na pozadí některých literárních velikánů anglické literatury. Perspektiva, která zastřešuje výše zmíněné, bude však představena romantickým nacionalismem, jenž je v textech zosobněn např. skrze fenomén obrody národního folklóru, archaizujícího jazykového purismu a romantickou fascinací dubem jako symbolem. Jinými slovy, tyto hudební tělesa vytvářejí ve svých textech – řečeno s Andersonem – „společenství v představách“ na bázi anglosaské identity.

Abstract:

The thesis explores literary inspiration for the lyrics of contemporary English musicians with an emphasis on the music groups belonging to Metal and Neofolk genres. Thus, the paper deals with the motifs as regards ancient archetypes and Germanic gods. On the background of a few classic authors of English literature follows the analysis of the Old English epic poems and their impact on the lyrics of contemporary English musicians. Further, the perspective of National Romanticism is discussed with respect to the resurgence of interest in English national Folk-Lore, linguistic Anglo-Saxon purism and romantic fascination with the oak tree in its symbolic form. In other words, these music groups create in their lyrics – as put forward by Benedict Anderson – “imagined communities” on the basis of Anglo-Saxon identity.
