“What a noble mind is here o’erthrown!”: A Character Analysis of Prince Hamlet in the First and Second Quartos of Shakespeare’s Play

Anotácia:

Hlavním cílem této bakalářské diplomové práce je vytvoření charakterových analýz Hamleta v K1 a K2 Shakespearovy hry a dále porovnat různá vyobrazení prince v těchto textových verzích a především zdůraznit jejich odlišnosti. Postava Hamleta je analyzována z pěti hledisek, které jsou úzce spjaty a zcela zásadní při tvorbě celkového vyobrazení Hamleta. Tyto atributy jsou: Hamletova prokrastinace, šílenství, náboženství, jeho vztah s ženskými postavami a jeho věk. Nejprve jsou tyto atributy zkoumány v kanonické verzi textu. Tatáž hlediska jsou poté analyzována v K1 verzi a rozdíly mezi těmito dvěma Hamlety jsou současně vyzdviženy.

Abstract:

The main purpose of this thesis is to create character analyses of Hamlet in Q1 and Q2 textual versions of Shakespeare’s play and to compare, contrast and emphasize the differences between the variants’ delineations. The character of Hamlet is analyzed from five aspects that are all closely connected and fundamental in order to create an overall image of the Prince. These attributes are – Hamlet’s procrastination, madness, religion, his relationship with women and age. First, these attributes are inspected in the canonical version of the play, then, the same aspects are examined and analyzed in Q1 and simultaneously compared to the canonical version’s portrayal with its differences being emphasized.
