Explication in 20th Century Translation of Fiction: A Chronological Comparison

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá explicitací a jejímu vztahu k překladatelským normám. Především si klade za cíl zjistit, zdali došlo od počátku 20. století ke změnám v jejím užitím, popřípadě určit, jaké přesně tyto změny byly. Pro splnění tohoto účelu tato práce porovnává dvacet překladů deseti anglicky psaných knih kanonických autorů. Konkrétně je porovnáváno deset starších překladů téže náhodně vybrané pasáže s deseti novějšími. Analýza se zaměřuje nejen na rozdíly v počtech explicitací, ale i na základě vlastní typologie explicitací porovnává užití explicitace starších a mladších generací překladatelů.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with explicitation and its relation to translational norms. Above all, its aim is to find out, whether there have been any changes in its use since the beginning of the 20th century and eventually to determine the exact nature of these changes. For this purpose, this thesis compares twenty translations of ten English-written books by canonical authors. Specifically, ten older translations are compared with ten newer translations of the same randomly chosen excerpts. The analysis focuses not only on the differences in the numbers of explicitations, but it also compares the use of explicitation of older and newer generations of translators in accordance its own explicitation typology.
