The influence of raw materials on the ester losses at transesterification of oil

Abstract:

Práce je zaměřena na transesterifikaci olejů (olivový a palmový) či směsí olejů (slunečnicový a řepkový, olivový a řepkový) s alkoholem (methanol a butanol) za přítomnosti katalyzátoru hydroxidu draselného. Hlavním produktem je směs esterů vyšších mastných kyselin. Zastave-ní reakce bylo provedeno neutralizací katalyzátoru dvěma látkami (kyselina fosforečná nebo oxid uhličitý). Cílem bylo zejména (i) popsat ztráty esterů vyšších mastných kyselin, tj. jejich obsah ve vedlejším produktu a (ii) distribuci esterů podle mastných kyselin v obou vrstvách. Bylo zjištěno, že zastoupení methylesterů kyselin v esterové i glycerolové vrstvě je různé pro různé způsoby zastavení reakce. Podobně se liší i zastoupení butylesterů kyselin, ale s menšími rozdíly než v případě methylesterů. Dále bylo zjištěno, že palmový olej není příliš vhodný pro transesterifikaci provedenou popsaným způsobem. Důvodem je to, že palmový olej není za laboratorní teploty tekutý, a proto jsou vysoké ztráty, a tím nižší výtěžek esterů. Vybraná data z analýzy glycerolové vrstvy byla vyhodnocena statisticky pomocí grafů komponentních vah v programu Statistica 12.

Abstract:

Transesterification of oils (olive and palm) or mixture of oils (sunflower and rapeseed, olive and rapeseed) with alcohol (methanol and butanol) using potassium hydroxide as catalyst was studied. The main product is mixture of esters of higher fatty acid. The transesterification was stopped by neutralization of the catalyst by phosphoric acid or gas carbon dioxide. The aim was especially (i) to describe loss of esters, i. e. their content in side product (the glycerol phase) and (ii) distribution of esters according to the fatty acid in both phases. It was found that the distribution of methyl esters in the ester and the glycerol phase depends on the types of reaction stopping. The distribution of butyl esters was also different, but with smaller dif-ferences than for methyl esters. It was also found that palm oil is not suitable for transesterification performed in the way that was described above. The reason is that palm oil is not liquid at room temperature and therefore esters loss is high and thereby esters yield is lower. The chosen data of the analysis of the glycerol phase was statistically evaluated by component analysis in the program Statistica 12.
