Accuracy and structure of parental and teacher assessment of children's abilities in the context of giftedness

Abstract:

Tématem této práce je rodičovské a učitelské hodnocení schopností dětí ve formě 1) posuzovacích škál pro identifikaci mimořádného nadání a 2) odhadu výkonu ve výkonovém testu. Prvním cílem je představení širšího rámce této problematiky s důrazem na praktické informace, které lze využít v rámci diagnostické praxe. Teoretická východiska proto mimo jiné zahrnují popis nejčastěji využívaných posuzovacích škál k identifikaci nadání v zahraničí, zhodnocení dostupných škál v ČR a jejich aktuálního využívání a zmapování dosavadního výzkumu v této oblasti u nás. Druhým cílem práce je prostřednictvím tří empirických studií nalézt odpovědi na tři výzkumné otázky: 1) Jak přesní jsou hodnotitelé při posuzování schopností? 2) Jaké faktory tuto přesnost ovlivňují? 3) Jakou strukturu má takové hodnocení, respektive dokáží hodnotitelé rozlišovat při posuzování mezi dílčími oblastmi? V rámci první studie je porovnávána přesnost dvou forem nově vytvořené rodičovské posuzovací škály Preschooler’s Ability Rating Scale (PARS) pro vyhledávání nadaných předškoláků. První se zaměřuje na aktuální úroveň schopností a projevy chování, druhá vychází z principu předčasné zralosti a ptá se na věkové období, ve kterém se pro nadání relevantní chování poprvé objevilo. Cílem druhé studie je ověřování faktorové struktury, souběžné validity a test-retest reliability české adaptace posuzovací škály Gifted Rating Scales-School Form (GRS-S; Pfeiffer & Jarosewich, 2003). Součástí studie je také srovnání zjištěné struktury mezi učiteli a rodiči a porovnání přesnosti jejich hodnocení. Třetí studie si klade za cíl ověřit vliv vybraných faktorů na učitelské hodnocení a jeho přesnost při odhadu výkonu v testech kognitivních schopností a školních dovedností žáků. Součástí studie je také empirické ověření teoretického modelu, který se zabývá utvářením dojmu učitele o žácích a jejich schopnostech. Dílčí závěry z jednotlivých studií jsou v závěru práce souhrnně diskutovány.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is a parental and teacher judgment of children´s abilities in form of 1) rating scales for identifying giftedness and 2) performance estimation in the test. Firstly, we want to introduce broad theoretical framework with emphasis on practical information that might be used in diagnostic praxis. Theoretical background thus consists of description of the most often internationally used rating scales for identifying giftedness, evaluation of these methods available in the Czech republic and their use and finally mapping of research of this issue in the Czech republic. Secondly, we aim to answer three research questions in three separate studies: 1) How accurate are the evaluators who assess abilities? 2) What factors effect this accuracy? 3) What structure does this rating have, respectively can evaluators distinguish between subareas in the assessment? The first study compares the accuracy of the two forms of the newly developed Preschooler’s Ability Rating Scale (PARS) for identifying gifted preschoolers. The first form focusses on the current level of the child’s abilities, the second form follows the principle of precocity and inquires about the age at which giftedness-relevant behavior appeared for the first time. The aim of the second study is to verify the factor structure, concurrent validity and test-retest reliability of the Czech adaptation of the Gifted Rating Scales-School Form (GRS-S; Pfeiffer & Jarosewich, 2003). The study also investigates differences in factor structure between teachers and parents and a compares the accuracy of their rating. The third study aims to verify the impact of selected factors on teacher judgment and its accuracy in estimating performance of students in tests of cog-nitive abilities and academic achievement. The study also includes empirical verification of the theoretical model following up with the formation of teachers' impression of students and their abilities. Conclusions from individual studies are discussed at the end of the thesis.
