Attributions of success and failure in two types of procrastinators

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce se zabývá vztahem mezi akademickou prokrastinací a atribucemi úspěchu a neúspěchu u konkrétní akademické práce. Dále se výzkumný projekt věnuje rozdílům v přisuzování příčin úspěchu a neúspěchu u dvou typů prokrastinátorů. Výzkumnému vzorku, který čítal 171 osob (29,8 % mužů a 70,2 % = žen), byla předložena série sebeposuzovacích dotazníků, které měřily akademickou prokrastinaci, potřebu termínů a identifikaci prokrastinace s vlastním životním stylem, celkový úspěch s jeho jednotlivými složkami a atribuce úspěchu a neúspěchu. Za pomocí kvantitativních statistických metod bylo zjištěno, že prokrastinátoři sami sebe vnímali jako méně úspěšné, než se vnímali neprokrastinátoři. Dále bylo zjištěno, že studenti, kteří prokrastinovali více, přisuzovali svůj neúspěch vnitřním faktorům a úspěch faktorům vnějším. Studenti, kteří prokrastinovali méně, přisuzovali svůj úspěch faktorům vnitřním. V rámci všech atribucí si svoje úspěchy a neúspěchy výzkumný soubor vysvětloval nejvíce vlastním úsilím. Rovněž bylo zjištěno, že mezi dvěma skupinami prokrastinátorů existuje významný rozdíl v tom, jak úspěšní se cítí. Konkrétně skupina studentů, která skórovala více na škále měřící potřebu termínů a identifikaci, se vnímala jako úspěšnější než skupina druhá. Tato skupina rovněž svůj úspěch přisuzovala více vlastnímu úsilí než druhá skupina.

Abstract:

The primary goal of this presented diploma thesis was to examine a relationship between academic procrastination and attributions of success and failure of one specific academic thesis. The secondary goal was to examine the differences in attributions of success and failure in two types of procrastinators. 171 respondents (29,8 % men & 70,2 % women) filled out series of self-assessment questionnaires by which we measured academic procrastination, need for deadlines, identification with procrastination as a life style, success and its components and attributions of success and failure. We used quantitative research methods to examine the relationships. The results showed that procrastinators see themselves as less successful compared to non-procrastinators. The results also showed that students, who attributed their failures to internal factors and their successes to external factors procrastinated more. Students, who procrastinated less, tended to attribute their successes to internal factors. It was aldo found that successes and failures were attributed to effort the most across the whole study sample. There were significant findings in differences between self-percieved success in two types of procrastinators. Most specifically, students who scored higher in scale that measured need for deadlines and identification with procrastination saw themselves as more successful than the other group of procrastinators. This group also attributed their success to effort more than the other group.
