Abstract:

Předmětem této diplomové práce je reflexe fenoménu sebevraždy prostřednictvím ženských hrdinek vybraných románů 19. století. Práce analyzuje a porovnává romány Probuzení od Kate Chopin, Anna Karenina od Lva. N. Tolstého a Paní Bovaryová od Gustava Flauberta. Nastiňuje pozadí patriarchální společnosti 19. století a snaží se objasnit jakou roli hrály manželství, genderové role, domácí sféra a kult domácího života v životě hrdinek a do jaké míry ovlivnily jejich duševní zdraví. Dále se tato práce věnuje okolnostem a motivům sebevražd románových hrdinek a má za cíl zodpovědět otázku, zda by tyto ženy měly být považovány za hrdinské postavy, které vzaly osud do svých rukou, nebo zda byly spíše obětí opresivní společnosti.

Abstract:

The present thesis aims to examine the suicide phenomenon through female heroines in selected 19th-century novels. The thesis analyzes and compares the novels The Awakening by Kate Chopin, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, and Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. It outlines the background of patriarchal society in the 19th century and seeks to clarify the role that marriage, gender roles, the domestic sphere, and the cult of domestic life played in the heroines' lives and to what extent they affected their mental health. Furthermore, this thesis focuses on the circumstances and motives of the heroines' suicides and aims to answer the question of whether these women should be considered heroic characters who took their fate into their own hands, or whether they were rather victims of an oppressive society.
