Abstract:

The master´s thesis focuses on the Middle-earth nations´ speech, implicit characterisation and the reflection of it in translation. It aims to examine what syntactic and lexical features are used by characters to mark their associations with particular nations and whether the same assumptions were generated in the target language. The thesis explores Tolkien´s scholarship and inventive spirit, his imaginary world, and Middle-earth´s lingua franca. The substantial part of the research analyses the peoples of Middle-earth speech with reference to tendencies, frequency, and prominence; considering the studies of Culpeper and Leech on characterisation while the last part of the thesis explores how the target language worked with this aspect to characterise the nations.

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá řečí národů Středozemě, její analýzou se zaměřením na charakterizaci, a zdali je diferenciace mezi jednotlivými národy patrná i v překladu. Cílem práce je zjistit, jaké syntaktické a lexikální prostředky používají jednotlivé postavy k začlenění se do určité skupiny, a jak s charakterizačním aspektem jazyka pracoval překladatel. Práce se zaměřuje na osobu Tolkiena jakožto akademika, ale i autora, na jeho mytologický svět, a zejména na linguu francu Středozemě. Podstatnou část práce tvoří analýza národů, která pracuje s tendencemi, četností a význačností v jejich řeči; opírá se o studie Culpepera a Leeche věnované charakterizaci, a poslední část se věnuje překladu, strategii překladatelky, a jak jsou tyto aspekty reflektovány v cílovém jazyku; a jestli vytváří stejné charakterizační dojmy jako v originálu.
