Representing the Motive of Alter Ego at the Dawn of Modernity in the Western Literary Tradition

Abstract:

Předložená práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat literární motiv dvojnictví z hlediska estetiky. Vychází z užití povahokresebné poetiky západoevropské tradice. Úvodní stať se proto snaží zachytit hlavní rysy pojednaného fenoménu vzhledem k literárním dějinám. Ve zkratce pojednává o tomto fenoménu v různých dílech od starověku po modernu. Následně práce pokračuje jako teoretické pojednání fenoménu alter ega vzhledem k estetickým kategoriím mimeze a étosu. V rámci toho je vyložený význam podobnosti jako základního předpokladu dvojnictví, a to i vzhledem k otázce sémiotiky. Dále se největší část práce věnuje vybraným dílům, v jejichž poetickém stváření povahokresby je možné odhalit různé schémata dvojníků. Práce se tak snaží odhalit klíčovou funkci alter ega v rámci uměleckých děl. Následující kapitola pokračuje k otázce typologie a její souvislosti s charakterizací postav, z čehož vyvstávají dílčí problémy. Jsou založeny hlavně na podobnosti postav skrze typologickou blízkost. Nakonec práce pojednává vztah postav-hypotéz a motivu dvojnictví, jejichž poetika povahokresby je bytostně propojena.

Abstract:

The presented thesis aims to explore the literary theme of doubleness as an aesthetic problem. It is based on the poetics of characterization in Western tradition. The introductory essay thus strives to portray the main features of the phenomenon within the literary history. It provides a brief account on the application of the given phenomenon in literary works from ancient to modern times. Subsequently, the thesis advances towards a theoretical exploration of the alter ego phenomenon and its role in the aesthetic aspect of a work of art, with special attention to the categories of mimesis and ethos. As a matter of consequence, the paper carries on with interpreting the meaning of similarity as a basic prerequisite of doubleness and at the same time as an issue for semiotic studies. The second part of the thesis focuses on selected literary works, trying to trace down the main scheme in a variety of poetic techniques of characterizing a literary persona. It seeks to unveil the key function of alter ego within the given artworks. The paper then discusses the question of typology and its relationship to portraying the characters, out of which another partial problems arises, concerning the polarization of characters and the similarity by membership to certain types. Finally, the thesis deals with the relation between the specific kind of character-hypothesis and the motive of a double, since the poetics of characterization of both is fundamentally linked.
