The phenomenon of 4DX cinema

Abstract:

4DX phenomenon represents a new breath and resurrection of filmmaking, which seeks to re-draw the viewer to to the multiplex cinemas. The goal of our reaseach is to answer the following questions: from which media has this phenomenom evolved, what led to his development and what impact has had its introduction to the film industry? In the first part we explain selected special effects in historical context, which reflects today’s trends of making 4DX special effects. This diploma thesis examines technological aspects such as stereoscopic 3D versions, Smell-O-Vision principle and moving chairs technology, which are essential to 4DX films. In the other part, it also focuses on assessing of 4DX contribution to the film industry from artistic but also viewer’s point of view.

Abstract:

Fenomén 4DX predstavuje nový nádych a obrodenie filmovej tvorby, ktorá sa snaží opätovne pritiahnuť diváka k plátnam multikín. Cieľom nášho bádania je odpovedať na otázky, z akého média sa tento fenomén vyvinul, čo viedlo k jeho rozvoju a aký dopad malo jeho zaradenie na filmový trh. V prvej časti priblížime vybrané doplnkové filmové efekty v historickom kontexte, ktoré odzrkadľujú súčasné trendy vytvárania špeciálnych efektov 4DX kina. Práca bude skúmať technologické aspekty ako stereoskopické 3D verzie, tak princípy Smell-O-Vision a techniky pohyblivých sedadiel, sprevádzajúce filmové tituly. Taktiež sa v ďalšej časti zameria na zhodnotenie prínosu tohto fenoménu ako z umeleckého, tak aj diváckeho hľadiska.
