The Exploration of Language Learner Histories Using Language Biography

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá vizuální jazykové životopisy (LLH) studentů anglické-ho pomaturitního studia. Ke sběru dat byl použit sebereflektivní nástroj LLH a mul-timodální metoda. Práce si dává za cíl pomocí tematické analýzy nalézt společné prv-ky a témata mezi LLH studentů jednotlivých jazykových úrovní (A2 – B1, B1 – B2, B2 – C1). Dalším cílem práce je tři skupiny dat porovnat a zjistit, zda jsou mezi nimi vý-znamné rozdíly. Hlavní témata (formální vzdělání, vyučovací hodiny, učitelé, zkuše-nosti, studium mimo školu, vystavení angličtině mimo školu) byla nalezena stejná napříč třemi skupinami, nicméně, byly značně rozdílně vyobrazeny. Bylo zjištěno, že nejzásadnější rozdíly mezi LLH tkví v tématech vystavení angličtině mimo školu a zkušenostem. Tato témata se významně pojí s autonomií žáka a postoji k angličtině, tedy faktory, jež podstatně ovlivňují jazykovou kompetenci.

Abstract:

The thesis explores visual language learning histories of participants attending a post-secondary school English course. The research was conducted by using a self-reflective instrument called language learning history (LLH) and multimodal meth-odology. The aim of the thesis is to search for common themes, using thematic analy-sis, among pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate participants’ LLHs. Subsequently, another goal is to find out whether there are any significant differ-ences among the three data sets. Main themes (formal learning, lessons, teachers, experience, non-formal learning, informal learning) were recognised across all three proficiencies, nonetheless, there were significant differences in the way these themes were represented. The findings showed vital differences particularly in the representations of themes “informal learning” and “experience”. These themes are arguably connected to learner autonomy and attitudes towards English which con-sequently influences one’s language competence.
